Description

TITLE: Full Stack Web & App Developer
ORGANIZATION: Colorectal Cancer Alliance
LOCATION: DC Metro Area Only
POSITION TYPE: Full-Time, Exempt
COMPENSATION: $120,000-$140,000 annual salary; Healthcare benefits are available for this role.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Full Stack Web & App Developer leads the design, development, and maintenance of secure, accessible, and high-performing digital platforms for the Colorectal Cancer Alliance. This role contributes to the full user experience strategy across mission-critical platforms — BlueHQ platform (patients, caregivers, navigators), K-SPY (clinical trial platform), research portals, and public web properties — ensuring usability, accessibility, and engagement in high-stakes environments. All solutions must meet strict HIPAA/HITECH and ADA/WCAG compliance standards.
The role bridges human-centered design with backend architecture, ensuring that platform design is tightly integrated with data visualization, AI-assisted tools, and research workflows. The developer creates scalable design systems, supports multi-sided portals for diverse stakeholders, and drives a continuous feedback loop to evolve our platforms based on real user needs.
This position is technology-agnostic — able to deliver full-stack solutions using hosting and development stacks as organizational needs evolve. It includes the traditional definition of full stack web to include mobile application development.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 8+ years of full stack development experience with demonstrated UX ownership.
  • Proficiency in modern JavaScript frameworks (React preferred) and CSS frameworks (TailwindCSS).
  • Experience with AWS Amplify and Cognito and equivalent hosting/authentication platforms.
  • Strong API integration skills (REST, GraphQL, API Gateway).
  • Familiarity with CMS platforms (Drupal, WordPress, headless CMS).
  • Working knowledge of UX research tools and methodologies.
  • Experience with HIPAA-compliant UX and secure data handling.
  • Mobile development experience with React Native, Flutter, or native iOS/Android languages preferred.
Responsibilities

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

KEY STRATEGIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Leads Human-Centered Design Across Mission-Critical Platforms

  • Collaborates on UX strategy for public web, BlueHQ, K-SPY, and research portals — multi-sided platforms serving patients, caregivers, clinicians, and researchers — ensuring intuitive, accessible, and emotionally resonant experiences.
  • Designs for patient, caregiver, clinician, and researcher needs and other diverse audiences.
  • Applies ADA/WCAG 2.1 AA and HIPAA/HITECH constraints in all UX decisions.

Bridges Design, Data and AI

  • Integrates UX with backend architecture, data pipelines, and analytics layers for data-rich dashboards, structured/unstructured data display, analytics, and more.
  • Designs interfaces for AI-assisted tools (e.g., RAG pipelines, GenAI copilots) to enhance navigation, research, and decision-making.
  • Partner with marketing, communications, engineers, architects, and research teams to ensure seamless user-facing integration.

Builds and Guides Scalable Design Systems and Standards

  • Develops reusable design systems, component libraries, and UI/UX standards to ensure consistency across web and portal environments.
  • Implements mobile/web frameworks that reduce fragmentation, accelerate iteration and maintain brand alignment.
  • Documents and maintains UX/UI patterns for cross-team adoption.

Elevates Web & Portal Strategy Across Constituents

  • Supports and integrates the full range of web experiences — from public education and advocacy to personalized, secure portals.
  • Aligns platform UX with the organizational objectives, engagement goals, research, scientific credibility, and advocacy mission.
  • Manage integration with third-party platforms for events, advocacy, and fundraising.
  • Ensures scalability for future features, integrations, and user groups.

Drives Stakeholder Research and Continuous Feedback Loops

  • Designs and executes UX research plans, including interviews, surveys, usability testing, and other methods.
  • Creates structured feedback pipelines for patients, caregivers, researchers, pharma partners, and internal teams to guide product roadmaps.
  • Translates research insights into prioritized product and design decisions.
  • Measure engagement, usability, and satisfaction across platforms.

TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Front-End & Application Development

  • Build responsive web interfaces using HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (ES6+), React (preferred), TailwindCSS, and component-based architecture.
  • Develop mobile applications using:
  • Cross-platform frameworks such as React Native or Flutter for reusable code and consistent UX across iOS and Android.
  • Native development where required (Swift/Objective-C for iOS, Kotlin/Java for Android).
  • Integrate web and mobile applications with REST and GraphQL APIs.
  • Implement AWS Amplify Studio UI components or equivalent design system tools in other stacks.
  • Optimize Core Web Vitals and performance metrics for both web and mobile.

Back-End Development

  • Build secure APIs and server-side applications using Node.js, PHP, or Python.
  • Manage relational and NoSQL databases, warehouses, and lakes (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, RedShift, HealthLake).
  • Implement secure authentication via AWS Cognito (OAuth2, federated identities) or equivalent identity management.
  • Apply role-based access control (RBAC) and encryption for HIPAA-compliant data handling.

Cloud & CI/CD

  • If AWS Amplify: Configure hosting, authentication, API Gateway, GraphQL schema, S3 static hosting, and CloudWatch for frontend/mobile observability.
  • If other stacks: Implement equivalent hosting, authentication, API management, and monitoring pipelines.
  • Maintain CI/CD pipelines via Amplify Console, GitHub Actions, GitLab, or equivalent, supporting both web and mobile deployment workflows.

Integration & Data Capture

  • Build dynamic form workflows using Amplify Studio form builder or equivalent frameworks, integrated with REDCap.
  • Implement autosave, mobile-first form design, and encrypted form submissions.
  • Integrate with MuleSoft APIs, Salesforce REST endpoints, and other third-party systems.

Compliance, Accessibility & Security

  • Enforce ADA/WCAG compliance and HIPAA/HITECH secure UX design principles for both web and mobile applications.
  • Mask PHI in UI where appropriate, implement session timeouts, and log access events.
  • Conduct vulnerability scanning and apply secure coding best practices across all platforms.
