Description

DESCRIPTION

The College of Integrative Studies (CIS) at Singapore Management University (SMU) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Learning Analytics. The position is open to candidates with research expertise across the field of Learning Analytics, including but not limited to developing novel methods and techniques, exploring diverse applications, and investigating use and systems. Research that connects with SMU’s research focus areas in Digital Transformation, Sustainable Living, and Growth in Asia is particularly welcome, though not required. We are open to applicants at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor levels, and welcome applications from senior candidates. Strong candidates at the Associate or Full Professor levels will be considered for tenure upon appointment.
Established in 2022, CIS is home to a strong community of interdisciplinary scholars and plays a pivotal role in helping students traverse the disciplinary areas associated with the other SMU Schools—Accountancy, Business, Economics, Computing, Law, and Social Sciences. The CIS delivers the University’s Core Curriculum for all undergraduate students and offers a suite of programmes including Singapore’s first individualizable major at the undergraduate level, the interdisciplinary Master of Sustainability, and MPhil and PhD programmes in Asian Urbanisms.

The successful candidate will:

  • Publish research in leading disciplinary and/or interdisciplinary journals. Although not required, faculty are encouraged to undertake or participate in interdisciplinary research.
  • Successfully apply for competitive external research funding.
  • Depending on rank, deliver between 1 to 3 sections per year of undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses. Teaching will be decided in consultation with the Dean/Associate Dean and likely include contributing to the Undergraduate Core Curriculum.
  • Mentor undergraduate and/or postgraduate students in academic and academic-related affairs.
  • Provide service to the College and University, including serving on committees, participating in events, outreach and admissions activities and, where appropriate, engaging with industry and other stakeholders.

Applicants should apply online (SMU Careers) with the following documents in PDF format:

  • A cover letter
  • A curriculum vitae
  • A statement of teaching philosophy
  • A research statement
  • A service statement
  • Teaching evaluations
  • Samples of up to three research papers
  • For applications at the Assistant Professor-level: Applicants should arrange for three academic reference letters to be sent directly to cisjobs@smu.edu.sg
  • For applications at the Associate and Full Professor-levels: Please include the names and contact details of three academic referees, who will be contacted if shortlisted.

Applicants are encouraged to apply by 31 July 2025, when review of applications will begin. The expected start date is 1 July 2026 or otherwise as mutually agreed. Applications will be treated with strict confidentiality and only short-listed candidates will be notified. At SMU, we celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
Please contact Associate Professor Terry van Gevelt (tvangevelt@smu.edu.sg) with any queries.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must:

  • Already hold or expect to be awarded a PhD in Learning Analytics or a relevant discipline by the time of hire.
  • Demonstrate a strong track record of high impact research as evidenced by publications and external research funding (at the Associate or Full Professor levels) or clear indications of that trajectory (Assistant Professor level).
  • Have evidence of excellence in teaching and be willing to engage in or develop innovative teaching methods.
