THE NURSING ASSISTANT AND PCT ARE VALUED STEPS IN THE UPMC INPATIENT PATIENT CARE SUPPORT CAREER LADDER, WITH OPPORTUNITIES FOR CONTINUED GROWTH AND ADVANCEMENT. TITLE AND SALARY WILL BE DETERMINED BASED UPON EDUCATION AND PATIENT CARE EXPERIENCE.

Our Full-Time NAs and PCTs typically work 36 hours each week to cover daylight, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts. Hours may vary by unit. Candidates with prior patient care experience are highly preferred and encouraged to apply.

NURSING ASSISTANT EDUCATIONAL/KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant or EIC training program
• Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
• Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
• Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

Patient Care Technician Educational/Knowledge Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must also have

o 1 Year of Experience OR
o enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation OR

o completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field

• Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class
• Successful completion of basic information system training.
• Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
• Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

**HIRED CANDIDATES WILL BE REQUIRED TO ATTEND FULL-TIME ORIENTATION (CLASSROOM-BASED AND UNIT-BASED) AT THE MCCANDLESS CAMPUS OF PASSAVANT FOR UP TO TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO BEGINNING IN THIS ROLE.

Nursing Assistant starting rate: $17.64/hour
Patient Care Technician starting rate: $18.04/hour

NURSING ASSISTANT RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Perform duties in line with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
• Report equipment malfunctions.
• Establish effective communication and professional relationships.
• Assist with unit activities (e.g., responding to call lights, passing meal trays, transporting patients).
• Receive and act on feedback; identify and communicate learning needs.
• Participate in self-review and improve knowledge, skills, and performance.
• Communicate clearly with the healthcare team and understand cultural diversity.
• Support workplace safety and maintain productive relationships.
• Perform nursing assistant core responsibilities (e.g., ADLs, point of care testing, vital signs, telemetry monitor application, HAC & PSI prevention, urine specimen collection).
• Provide direct patient care as directed by the RN.
• Maintain a safe and organized environment.
• Acquire and distribute supplies and equipment.
• Deliver patient nourishments and mail; provide diversional activities.
• Document in medical records and complete clerical functions.
• Comply with safety policies and procedures.
• Adhere to patient care and hospital information policies.
• Respond to emergent situations and provide companionship/supervision as required.
• Suggest and support departmental changes; assume responsibility for assignments.
  In addition, the PCT may be trained to perform additional duties.
