Description
The Surgical Pathology Technician supports the Pathology Department by accurately receiving, accessioning, and preparing surgical biopsy specimens for microscopic examination. This role ensures specimen integrity, precise documentation, regulatory compliance, and efficient workflow within Gross and Autopsy Pathology. Hours Full‑time 7AM - 3:30PM or 7:30AM - 4PM | Monday–Friday | No weekend, holidays, or on-call!] Responsibilities Perform gross examination and preparation of surgical biopsy specimens, providing clear and accurate gross descriptions in accordance with the Surgical Pathology Manual. Accession specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), ensuring complete and accurate documentation. Verify patient identification on specimen containers and requisitions; identify, reject, and document specimens with conflicting or incomplete identifiers. Correlate patient history with specimen type and communicate with clinicians to resolve discrepancies, documenting outcomes in APLIS. Utilize voice recognition software to document gross specimen findings. Perform special specimen handling as required, including radiography, photography, special fixation, and other techniques. Receive, sort, label, file, and retrieve surgical and autopsy materials using barcoded identifiers while maintaining accurate tracking records. Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposition of surgical and autopsy tissue in compliance with safety, biohazard, and regulatory standards. Maintain laboratory equipment and tools, including routine operation, preventative maintenance, and required documentation logs. Order and maintain adequate departmental and physician office supplies. Communicate effectively with pathologists, clinicians, laboratory staff, and internal/external customers across diverse populations. Demonstrate strong attention to detail while managing multiple tasks in a fast‑paced, detail‑driven environment. Attend mandatory safety, compliance, training sessions, in‑services, and meetings as required. Perform duties in accordance with UPMC system‑wide competencies and behaviors. Perform other duties as assigned. Required: Associate’s degree in a laboratory science and two (2) years of hospital laboratory experience, OR Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related health science field. Preferred: One (1) year of hospital laboratory experience. Knowledge of medical terminology. Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS).
