Job Description As a Functional Safety Engineer – Battery Systems, you will join our engineering team in Derby to support the development of advanced electrified powertrain and battery technologies within the automotive and mobility sector. You will play a key role in ensuring battery systems and related electrical architectures meet functional safety requirements, supporting activities across the product lifecycle. The role involves performing safety analyses, defining safety requirements, and working closely with systems, software, and hardware teams to ensure compliance with relevant safety standards. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop safe, reliable, and compliant battery systems, while supporting modern engineering practices including CI/CD pipelines for embedded software and system validation workflows. Location: Milton Keynes On Site: Yes Clearance: Yes Experience Level: Mid-Level Key Responsibilities: Support the development and implementation of functional safety activities for battery systems in accordance with ISO 26262 Perform hazard analysis and risk assessments (HARA) and define functional safety concepts Develop and manage functional safety requirements and safety cases across the system lifecycle Work closely with systems, hardware, and software teams to ensure safety requirements are correctly implemented and verified Support verification and validation activities for safety-critical battery management systems (BMS) Contribute to the development and maintenance of CI/CD pipelines to support automated testing, validation, and integration of embedded software within battery systems Ensure traceability between safety requirements, design implementation, and verification evidence Participate in design reviews, safety audits, and technical assessments Support collaboration with suppliers and cross-functional teams to ensure safety compliance across the system architecture Qualifications Required Skills: Support the development and implementation of functional safety activities for battery systems in accordance with ISO 26262 Perform hazard analysis and risk assessments (HARA) and define functional safety concepts Develop and manage functional safety requirements and safety cases across the system lifecycle Work closely with systems, hardware, and software teams to ensure safety requirements are correctly implemented and verified Support verification and validation activities for safety-critical battery management systems (BMS) Contribute to the development and maintenance of CI/CD pipelines to support automated testing, validation, and integration of embedded software within battery systems Ensure traceability between safety requirements, design implementation, and verification evidence Participate in design reviews, safety audits, and technical assessments Support collaboration with suppliers and cross-functional teams to ensure safety compliance across the system architecture Required Qualifications: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent military experience. Desirable Skills: Experience with model-based development environments such as MATLAB/Simulink.​​​​ Knowledge of battery management algorithms, cell balancing, and thermal management systems. Familiarity with automotive communication protocols such as CAN or LIN Experience supporting software verification, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), or system validation activities.
