Description

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: St Peter’s Walworth is an inclusive and welcoming Church. We welcome all applications from a wide range of candidates in our local community and beyond. We are an inclusive organization, and we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected characteristic or social background, and we actively promote equality of opportunity for all with the right mix of talent, skills and potential. We are especially keen to receive applications from people who are members of communities minoritised and under-represented in the heritage sector. We are a Christian church but this role may be filled by someone of any faith or of none.
Fundraising Manager – St Peter’s Walworth
Salary: £50,000 per year (or equivalent day rate). Part-time and hybrid/home working considered, with some on-site days. So much be able to travel into London.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a central role in a major heritage restoration project. St Peter’s Walworth is Sir John Soane’s first London church and one of only four Grade I listed buildings in Southwark.
In November 2024, the church submitted a first-round application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) for the “Building Beyond: Soane Reimagined” project. We requested a Development Grant of £438,000 as part of a £3.1m first-round pass. In March 2025, NLHF approved our application. Pending permission to start, the Development Phase will run for 18 months, after which we will apply for the Delivery Phase.
During this period we will need to appoint staff, a design team, QS, and specialist consultants. Key tasks include completing design work to RIBA Stage 3, securing planning and Faculty approvals, preparing all required studies, and raising more than £1m in partnership funding. We already have strong foundations — including £150,000 committed from Southwark Council — and a fundraising consultant developing our strategy and case for support.
We are now looking for a Fundraising Manager to join the team.
The Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic, resourceful communicator with excellent writing skills and proven fundraising experience. You will focus on applications to trusts, foundations, and individual donors, while working closely with the church team and Fundraising Committee.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a talent for research and building relationships with funders.
  • Write compelling proposals and present ideas with confidence.
  • Ensure fundraising activity complies with charity law, ethical gift policies, and data protection.
  • Bring a strong track record across the full fundraising cycle: prospecting, cultivation, securing gifts, stewardship, and donor recognition.

This role offers the chance to make a real impact, supported by the Heritage Manager and the wider project team.

Key Tasks

  • Work with the Heritage Manager to identify priorities and develop persuasive proposals.
  • Prepare and submit funding applications and budgets in line with funder requirements.
  • Track deadlines and maintain accurate fundraising records.
  • Support the Fundraising Committee with administration.
  • Build strong working relationships with the Committee, PCC and Steering Group members.
  • Thank and steward funders, providing updates and reports as required.
  • Meet and engage with donors and supporters, both in person and online.
  • Provide regular reports to the Heritage Manager and contribute to project planning.
  • Represent St Peter’s at relevant forums, events and seminars.
  • Travel within London (and occasionally beyond, including outside office hours) to meet supporters.
