The University of Manchester is leading the Future Biomanufacturing Research Hub (Future BRH, https://futurebrh.com/) with reseach Spokes at Imperial, UCL, Nottingham, IBioIC, CPI, and the UK Catalysis Hub. At the Future BRH we are developing industrial biotechnology towards efficient and sustainable bio-based manufacturing for key UK sectors: Pharmaceuticals, Chemicals, Engineering Materials and Fuels. By connecting interdisciplinary discovery science together with industry we are devloping innovative biomanufacturing solutions to help support the growing bio-economy.
Working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary scientists, as a central part of a high quality national interdisciplinary research Centre, this position will provide the successful candidate with an exciting opportunity to further develop and apply their research skills to the sustainable biomanufacture of chemicals, materials, pharmaceuticals and synthetic fuels. We seek applications from experienced researchers with expertise, a proven track record and research interests in photobiology and photochemistry with interests also industrial host strain engineering.
The successful applicant will support the Grand Challenge research theme of “Realising the value of industrial biotechnology at scale”, and will work across the research platforms for “industrial strain engineering ” and sustainable feedstocks.
The expectation is that the holder of this senior position will have the necessary research expertise to drive forward and deliver collaborative science programmes, and to work both with academic and industrial partners. This position will suit candidates keen to build their longer term independent career in academia. As a member of an interdisciplinary research Centre, a strong ethos for team-based working will be essential.
The appointee will drive the structural biology, computational modelling and experimental redesign of terpene synthases of interest to the biomanufacturing. This will involve overproduction, purification and crystallisation of the target proteins, data collection and structure determination, rational design, mutagenesis and production of variant proteins. We are seeking candidates with proven expertise in structural biology, computational chemistry, protein engineering (including use of an expanded genetic code for the introduction of non canonical amino acids). Expertise in analytical and mechanistic chemistry is expected. Additional responsibilities for both positions are detailed in the attached job description
