FVP, Non-Agency Underwriting Operations
Location:

What you’ll do:
The FVP of Non-Agency Underwriting Operations is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Non-Agency underwriting operations, both in-house and third-party reviews. This role ensures consistent application of credit policy, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and high-quality customer service. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in mortgage underwriting, a strong understanding of risk management, and a proven ability to lead high-performing teams in a dynamic environment.

Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead and manage the residential mortgage underwriting team, including managers, underwriters, and support staff.
  • Develop and execute underwriting strategies aligned with corporate goals and risk appetite.
  • Serve as a key member of the mortgage leadership team, contributing to broader business planning and decision-making of this product.
  • Calibrate and train Non-Agency fulfilment and Third Party due diligence teams to AmeriHome guidelines
  • Regular training to all underwriting, lender/client staff on Non-Agency guidelines

Operational Excellence

  • Oversee daily underwriting operations to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant loan decisions.
  • Implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, reduce cycle times, and improve Lender/clients or borrower experience per channel.
  • Monitor and manage underwriting pipelines, SLAs, and productivity metrics.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Sales, Capital Markets, Quality Control, and Corporate Governance leadership towards Non-Agency product and process success.

Risk & Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to internal credit policies, Credit Manuals, GSEs and private investor guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Partner with Compliance and Risk teams to proactively identify and mitigate underwriting risks.
  • Assist as required in internal and external audit preparation and response efforts.
  • Ensure all underwriting procedures are updated

Talent Development

  • Recruit, train, and mentor underwriting staff to build a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide coaching to support career growth development.

Technology & Innovation

  • Collaborate with IT and digital teams to evaluate and implement underwriting technology solutions, including automation and AI tools.
  • Stay current on industry trends and innovations to maintain a competitive edge.

What you’ll need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, or related field (MBA or equivalent preferred).
  • 8+ years of experience in residential mortgage underwriting management, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of agency and non-agency underwriting guidelines.
  • Strong understanding of mortgage regulations (e.g., TRID, ECOA, HMDA, ATR).
  • Proven track record of leading large teams and managing complex operations.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency with LOS platforms (e.g., Encompass), OCR technology, Automated Underwriting tools and underwriting systems (e.g., DU, LP).

Preferred Attributes:

  • DE (Direct Endorsement) and/or SAR (Staff Appraisal Reviewer) certification.
  • Experience with digital mortgage platforms and automation tools.
  • Change management and process reengineering experience.
