QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years of professional experience in FX for animation, VFX, or film.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with experience supervising or leading FX teams.
  • Proven ability to break down complex effects, assess artist capabilities, and manage task distribution.
  • Advanced proficiency in FX software such as Houdini, Maya, and Nuke.
  • Experience with pipeline tools, procedural workflows, and template/rig development.
  • A strong artistic eye and understanding of visual storytelling and timing.
  • Comfortable participating in client calls, team reviews, and production meetings.
  • Familiarity with ShotGrid or other project-tracking tools is a plus.
  • Experience mentoring artists and conducting performance reviews is preferred.

    The wage range for this role reflects compensation across all of ICON’s projects. The final salary will be determined based on the specific position, the current show assignment, and the applicant’s experience and portfolio. This range accounts for varying levels of experience and responsibilities.

Responsibilities
  • Accurately track and delegate FX tasks across the project, considering the strengths and interests of each artist.
  • Participate in FX callouts for each episode, identifying creative opportunities while meeting delivery goals.
  • Break down FX complexity and provide accurate time estimates for each shot.
  • Collaborate with the Art Director to develop the look of hero FX, and effectively communicate the vision to the team.
  • Guide artists to maintain consistency in quality, style, and technical execution.
  • Participate in lead meetings, dailies, client calls, and reviews.
  • Step in on episodic shot work if necessary to ensure delivery timelines are met.
  • Conduct R&D and TD work for upcoming effects, including developing FX rigs, templates, and reusable tools.
  • Ensure adherence to studio pipeline standards and contribute to pipeline/tool improvements.
  • Contribute to early client-facing FX tests and help align expectations.
  • Mentor artists, foster team cohesiveness, and maintain a positive, collaborative environment.
  • Conduct routine performance evaluations, providing feedback, identifying growth opportunities, and recommending team members for promotions or project placements.
  • Collaborate with HR and Production on hiring efforts, including conducting interviews and helping to select candidates.
  • Help maintain budget awareness by managing assignments and monitoring overtime needs.
