JOB OVERVIEW

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of the full range of the Council’s parks, gardens and open spaces.
  • Ensuring public areas are safe, clean, and well-maintained, while also interacting with members of the public and supporting seasonal and horticultural operations.
  • Carry out grounds maintenance in public parks, playing fields, landscaped areas, and other open spaces – including grass cutting, hedge trimming, sweeping, hoeing, raking, edging, litter removal, and general cleaning.
  • Assist with constructional labouring work and the erection/dismantling of sports and public-use equipment.
  • Patrol designated areas, issue fees/tickets, and ensure public compliance with Council bylaws.
  • Undertake horticultural duties such as planting, pruning, seeding, turfing, and preparing sports areas (e.g. line marking, fertilising).
  • Support higher-graded gardeners in seasonal work planning, plant propagation, and nursery site maintenance.
  • Drive allocated vehicles as directed, performing basic checks and maintenance, transporting goods, equipment and staff, and ensuring vehicle records are up to date.
  • Operate and control grounds machinery and hand tools, ensuring safe use and equipment accountability.
  • Attend court as required, representing the Council when necessary.
  • Assist with stock and equipment ordering under supervision.
  • Open and close Council parks as a keyholder and inform the Leisure Department of facility availability.
  • Liaise with the public courteously, responding to queries in line with Council policies.
