Description Gardens and Grounds Crew Member Position Description Middleton Place National Historic Landmark- Middleton Place is America’s Oldest Landscaped Gardens and home to a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Located along the Ashley River in Charleston, Middleton Place is a National Historic Landmark, Historic Home, Research Center, and Historic Plantation and Stableyards. Position Summary-Gardener The horticulture team at this National Historic Landmark is responsible for general garden maintenance. The people who work in this department have a passion for plants and landscaping with hands-on experience in garden maintenance. Reports to: Vice President of Horticulture FLSA Status: Full Time Non-Exempt Qualifications Experience requirements-1-year experience working in the horticulture field Other required skills-Previous experience working safely with all types of landscaping and gardening equipment Effective work habits including time management, teamwork, and a proactive mindset Formal horticulture training or certification is a plus Knowledge of plant species, soil types, pest control Good communication skills and customer-focused attitude Work Environment and Physical Demands: Working outdoors in all weather conditions; including heat, rain, cold, and humidity. Ability to stand, walk, bend and kneel with an ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work involves exposure to tools, machinery, chemicals and outdoor elements including dirt, pollen and insects Primary Responsibilities and Duties: Garden Maintenance-perform tasks including mowing, planting, weeding, watering, fertilizing, mulching and pruning to ensure gardens are healthy and well-maintained Plant Care Equipment Maintenance-maintain equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition, operate machinery safely and efficiently Other- Other related duties as assigned
