The Data Curation Scientist position requires a motivated and capable scientist to provide end-to-end support for the Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC), to facilitate our missions in support of NASA earth data products from remotely sensed suite of NASA satellites. These data products include legacy, current and future NASA Earth Science mission data (satellite and modeling), and discipline-related products. For more information about the GES DISC please visit our web site (http://disc.gsfc.nasa.gov/).
Data Curation Scientist responsibilities will include understanding the currently archived data at GES DISC (data formats and associated metadata), developing scientific applications such as algorithms for generating value-added products and applications to support advanced services that can be plugged into existing visualization and analysis systems, and developing tools to support interoperability for discovering, accessing, customizing, viewing, and analyzing data. Position responsibilities will also include developing extensive documentation on the data products and services, providing user-focused support, and supporting the GES DISC user outreach efforts. An example of value-added support services is our Giovanni web-based visualization tool (https://giovanni.gsfc.nasa.gov/giovanni/).
Responsibilities will also include scientific communication with data producers; reviewing and testing sample files for internal metadata completeness and accuracy; evaluating file formats structures necessary for interoperability; reviewing and creating user documentation for accuracy; evaluating data collection sizes to prepare for storage requirements; authoring UMM-C metadata records; registering and maintaining DOIs; creating data release articles and other web content. Curation scientists are also expected to act as the first point of contact for user questions; promoting the GES DISC and NASA data products at conferences; coordinating data preservation activities; and creating robust metadata that describes the data.
Skills required include: exceptional Earth science educational background and experience preferably at Masters with work experience or Doctorate in Earth, environmental or Physical Sciences, excellent written and verbal communication skills, foundational experience with at least one programming language (preferably Python), and familiarity with common Earth science data formats such as netCDF and HDF. This position also requires working in a team environment, interfacing between scientists, engineers, and operations staff, with frequent communication with external data providers, partners, and users.
Additional preferred skills and experience may include: working in a Scaled Agile environment with Atlassian tools (Jira, Bitbucket, Wiki), experience coding in Git repositories, foundational understanding of AWS cloud, experience working with NASA Earth science data, and Earth science data access tools such as OPeNDAP, Giovanni, Harmony, Earthdata Search, and the Common Metadata Repository (CMR).
The Data Support Scientist applicant is expected to solve complex algorithm or data conversion problems with little or no oversight and have the ability to respond effectively to science data user questions on technical and scientific issues, provide technical and scientific support in enhancing and extending data and information services.
