Description
Description The Gearbox Design Engineer is responsible for the development, coordination, analysis, definition, detailing, and optimization of gearbox projects, whether integrated with electric motors or standalone. Involved from concept through validation and product launch, ensuring performance, reliability, and compliance with technical standards, design and process criteria, and customer requirements. Product lines include both standard and custom designs with high engineering content. This role also supports customer orders from the proposal phase through design, development, manufacturing, testing, and field service/aftermarket activities. The engineer will be responsible for collaboration and sharing of best design practices within the WEG Group. Main Responsibilities Design gearboxes for various industrial applications, considering mechanical, thermal, and efficiency requirements. Perform calculations for gear, shaft, bearing, housing sizing, and other related components based on standards and customer specifications. Develop 3D models and detailed technical drawings using CAD software and engineering systems. Collaborate with electric motor teams to ensure seamless mechanical and functional integration. Conduct and participate in structural (FEA), thermal, vibration, and noise analyses for validation. Plan and execute prototype testing and field failure analysis. Work closely with manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to support production. Maintain accurate technical documentation and contribute to continuous product improvement. Coordinate gearbox and gearmotor projects focused on optimization and portfolio expansion. Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. Propose improvements to existing gearbox designs. Must be an enthusiastic self-starter, able to organize and pursue broad objectives, and have the ability to manage multiple/changing priorities. Review and analyze specifications, sketches, drawings, ideas, and the procedures and instructions to be followed. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated sense of urgency. Embrace a continuous improvement mindset, actively seeking opportunities to enhance processes and product quality. Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field. Minimum 2 years of engineering experience in gearbox design. Proven experience in gearbox or power transmission system design. Knowledge of gears, materials, lubrication, and tolerances. Knowledge and hands-on experience in gear and gearbox manufacturing processes. Proficiency in CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and analysis software (e.g., ANSYS). Familiarity with business software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project). Continuous improvement mindset with a focus on product quality. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing both internally & with customers Proven experience in project coordination. Understanding of resistance of materials, surface finishes, manufacturing processes Physical ability to travel freely within manufacturing and office facilities. This requires climbing stairs and moving over, around, and about shop machinery. Have the physical ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds. Flexibility to eventual travel (domestic and international) to customers, conferences, suppliers.
