About the Role
We are seeking a General Accountant to be a part of a new plant start-up based in Port Colborne, Ontario. The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of general accounting (including support to payables and receivables functions) for the company to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with company policies and regulations.
Reporting Relationships
This position directly reports to the Finance Director and does not supervise others.

Key Accountabilities

  • Prepare financial statements and supporting schedules according to monthly close schedule.
  • Facilitate and complete monthly close procedures.
  • Analyze revenues, commissions, and expenses to ensure that they are recorded appropriately on a monthly basis.
  • Prepare monthly account and bank reconciliations.
  • Assist with analyzing financial statements on a monthly basis, and report on variances.
  • Track and analyze construction and capital project spending.
  • Communicate with Project Managers to close projects in a timely manner.
  • Assist with financial or tax audits.
  • Assist with preparing tax returns and corporate reporting requirements.
  • Assist with quarterly producer reports, analyzing and correcting discrepancies.
  • Assist in documentation and monitoring of internal controls.
  • Conform with, and abide by, all regulatory guidance and internal policies and procedures.
  • Assist with maintaining policies, procedures, and workflow for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Contribute to department and organization special projects as assigned.
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting.
  • Assist with intercompany billing and transactions with related Foreign Exchange calculations.
  • Assist with AR reporting and collections.
  • Maintain the fixed asset system (for new acquisition, sales and/or disposal) and depreciation schedules.
  • Ensure efficient financial transactions and record-keeping.

Qualifications

EDUCATION BACKGROUND:

Must possess a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or business degree with accounting emphasis. Professional accounting designation is preferred.

Knowledge & Experience:

  • 3+ years of general accounting experience in a manufacturing environment is required, including experience with AP and AR.
  • Intermediate to advance knowledge of major accounting is required; must possess thorough understanding of Canada GAAP (ASPE: Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises).
  • Knowledge of statutory accounting principles is required.
  • Must possess intermediate to advance experiences with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook; must be familiar with software packages for both general ledger and statutory accounting. ERP experience is required; MS Dynamics is a plus.
  • Cost accounting experience is a plus.
  • Experience with budgets and forecasting is preferred.
  • Experience in a multinational company and the ability to work with people across cultures is preferred.
