GENERAL FOREMAN JOB DESCRIPTION

The General Foreman oversees vegetation management crews, ensuring efficient operations, adherence to utility specifications, and effective administration of all crew-related activities. This includes responsibility for training, pay practices, employee lifecycle management (hiring, promotion, and termination), and project planning and execution. The General Foreman plans and assigns tasks, enforces strict adherence to safety protocols, conducts investigations into incidents (injuries, property damage) and disciplinary matters, and manages project quality standards. This role requires meticulous record-keeping, interpreting work orders from utility personnel, directing emergency crew operations when necessary, and maintaining strong communication with all stakeholders.

  • Must be able to write, read and comprehend written and verbal job instructions/information.
  • Must be willing to travel out of state for emergency storm work.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must have transportation to and from the startup location.

Responsibilities
  • Manage and mentor vegetation management crews, ensuring optimal performance and productivity.
  • Manage the full employee lifecycle, including hiring, promotions, disciplinary actions, and terminations in coordination with HR and Safety if necessary.
  • Conduct regular post-work critiques for each crew.
  • Plan and execute projects, prioritizing tasks, assigning work to crew members based on skill sets, and adapting to changing conditions (weather, supply, personnel) to achieve project goals.
  • Track project progress, including maintaining accurate project maps with status, crew locations, and estimated completion dates.
  • Ensure all work adheres to utility specifications.
  • Coordinate activities with other General Forepersons working with the utility to ensure customer requirements are achieved.
  • Assist with customer notifications and address customer complaints.
  • Enforce all company and regulatory safety protocols.
  • Emphasize safe use of tools, machinery, and equipment, providing training on safety gear, helmets, and procedures.
  • Conduct investigations of incidents (injuries, property damage) in coordination with safety and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
  • Address and resolve routine on-site issues promptly and effectively.
  • Inspect crews, start/stop times, and identify project locations.
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of tools and supplies to support assigned crews.
  • Audit time sheets for accuracy.
  • Communicate effectively with all stakeholders (customers, property owners, public, contractors, utility representatives, management, safety personnel, inspectors, and administration) to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Interpret work orders and instructions from utility personnel.
  • Regularly report project status to supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records related to crew activities, project progress, safety incidents, and personnel matters.
  • Direct emergency crew operations as needed, ensuring swift and appropriate action in critical situations.
