Description SUMMARY Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work for the Public Works Department, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of water, sewer, streets, and drainage infrastructure. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING DUTIES. ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS MAY BE IDENTIFIED BY THE CITY AND LISTED AS SUCH IN THE INCUMBENT'S PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL ELEMENTS. VARIOUS TASKS MAY BE ASSIGNED UNDER EACH ESSENTIAL FUNCTION. THOSE THAT ARE LISTED UNDER THE EXAMPLES OF WORK ARE NOT ALL INCLUSIVE. THEY ARE EXAMPLES ONLY AND MAY BE AMENDED OR ADDED TO AS NEEDED BY THE CITY. EXAMPLES OF WORK Follow the instructions of the superintendent. Lead a crew in the maintenance and repairs of water, sewer, streets, and drainage infrastructure working independently from the direct leadership of the supervisor. Ability to observe and assess situations to make sound decisions and initiate maintenance and repairs related to the Public Works Department. Able to perform all tasks of Laborer I and II. Perform semi-skilled to skilled duties in several trades in the minor construction, alteration, maintenance and repair of water and sewer facilities, municipal streets, right-of-ways, drainage systems, and city facilities. Able to perform specialized duties in one or more key areas related to water, sewer, streets, and drainage. Operate a backhoe, track-hoe, and other equipment as required. Operate equipment safely, follow operator guidelines and wear appropriate safety protective apparel. Assist other crews in the needs of the Public Works Department. Seasonal duties as required. Practice appropriate safety measures. THE INCUMBENT WILL PERFORM OTHER JOB-RELATED TASKS AS ASSIGNED AND REQUIRED. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Some supervisory responsibilities required. Supervise crew members to complete required tasks when necessary. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Completion of standard high school, vocational school or equivalency and one-year successful full-time work experience in related operations and some experience in supervision OR Three years successful experience as a Laborer II or equivalent experience in applicable trades KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS Knowledge of occupational hazards involved in specialized work and the proper safety precautions for safe job performance. Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in water, sewer, streets, and drainage areas. Knowledge of city geography. Skilled in minor repair and maintenance of equipment. Able to follow oral and written work instructions. Able to prepare routine work reports. Able to exercise dependability, punctuality, & willingness to assist co-workers when work priorities change. Able to operate an Ipad or other smart device for use in documenting work and accessing work documents as needed and for daily communication purposes. Able to operate the following equipment: Manual tools, i/e. shovels, backhoe and track hoe, dump truck, power generator, tractor pulling mower and /or bush hogs, weed eaters, street sweeper, motorized dirt trap, city vehicle, and minimal knowledge to operate front-end loader, and other equipment as required. OTHER REQUIREMENTS Have and maintain a valid MS Vehicle Operator’s license. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS These physical requirements are not exhaustive and additional job-related physical demands may be added to these by the City of Brandon, MS if the need arises. Corrective devices may be used to meet these physical requirements. Heavy work May frequently lift up to approximately 50 pounds and/or occasionally lift up to approximately 100 pounds. Physical strength and agility Sufficient to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time and occasionally under unfavorable weather conditions. Vision Requires ability to perceive and discern objects with the eye, including maps, charts, equipment control panels, etc. Speaking/Hearing Requires ability to give and receive information through speaking and listening. Motor Coordination Requires ability to use fingers and hands to work equipment and make repairs. Will frequently be required to stand, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or bend. WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The noise level in the outside work environment is loud.
