GENERAL MANAGER OF THE 1842

Ohio Wesleyan University, a selective, private, undergraduate liberal arts, residential
institution founded in 1842 and located just 20 miles north of Columbus, is seeking candidates
for the position of General Manager of The 1842. The 1842 is a private entertainment venue
owned by Ohio Wesleyan University for students that provides a fun, lively environment to
enjoy food, alcoholic beverages, indoor and outdoor games, and social interaction. 1842’s
facilities include an indoor game hall with 4 duckpin bowling lanes, 2 electronic dart boards,
two pinball machines, and a pool table; a bar serving beer, wine, seltzers, and soft drinks; a
food operation serving a limited menu of pub-style foods; an indoor lounge with a small
performance stage; an integrated video/sound system throughout the facility; and outdoor
amenities including two patios, a small basketball court, and a sand volleyball court.

JOB SUMMARY:

The General Manager will have responsibility for managing operations of OWU’s newest student
social hub embedded in the residential area of campus. The GM will ensure the venue provides an
exciting opportunity for students to socialize and make memories through planning events, developing
operating procedures, conducting marketing efforts, supervising a team of student employees, and
ensuring the facility is well-maintained. Dining/beverage services and housekeeping services will be
managed and supervised by other third-party companies, but the GM will maintain a close relationship
with those colleagues and supervisors, and with other OWU employees who assist with such key
services as facility repair and maintenance, technology, programming efforts, accounting and budget
management, and more. This is a 12-month position reporting directly to the Dean of Student Services
within the Division of Student Engagement and Success.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to the qualifications listed in “About the Candidate”, the successful candidate will have

the following:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, or a combination of

advanced learning and relevant work experience, is required.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral formats.
  • Ability to partner effectively with others to accomplish goals and objectives.
  • Experience supervising employees and teams.
  • Knowledge of best practices in hospitality operations, ideally within the food/beverage

industry.

  • Knowledge of sound financial practices for retail operations.
  • Ability to think creatively and entrepreneurially in advancing the goals of the venue.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2-3 years of experience in hospitality services, student activities, or student life/affairs.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure the 1842 venue provides an exciting and safe opportunity for students to

socialize and create memories.

  • Establish and uphold essential operating policies and procedures that include facility

usage, staffing, and safety needs.

  • Establish and uphold facility and equipment inspection and repair methods to ensure

the venue remains in optimal condition and repairs are handled expeditiously.

  • Hire, train, and evaluate student employees working in the facility who do not report

to contracted service providers (food/beverage and housekeeping).

  • Oversee efforts to provide an array of events and programs in the venue that are of

interest to students, in partnership with the Student Involvement Office, Residential

Life, Intramurals staff, and other relevant departments or organizations.

  • Conduct marketing efforts to promote usage of the venue among students.
  • Manage and monitor financial operations of the venue in partnership with the

university’s food service provider and with OWU’s Business Office.

  • Coordinate with OWU’s Facilities to address facility maintenance, repair, and

improvement needs.

  • Coordinate with OWU’s Information Services Office to address technology needs,

including internet access and technology systems support.

  • Coordinate with OWU’s Public Safety Office to address safety needs, including door

access and camera systems, security procedures, and incidents of concern.
