Description
Everest People is thrilled to partner with Metalco Recyclers to find their next General Manager! Multi-site leadership across 8 branches Hands-on recycling industry experience Regular travel across the North Island The company Metalco Recyclers, proudly New Zealand owned and operated with strong foundations, a practical culture, and clear ambition for the future. Leaders in the scrap metal industry with purpose-built recycling facilities across 8 branches in the North Island involving heavy plant, transport fleets, commodity trading, and diverse frontline teams. The yards are efficient, modern and professional offering friendly service delivered at a high standard to all Metalco customers. This business works with the latest technology systems, focusing on safety and the environment; leading in the import and export of scrap metal. Metalco now has an opportunity for an experienced General Manager to step in and lead the business through its next phase of growth and development. This is a senior leadership role with genuine influence, suited to someone who enjoys being close to the action, balancing strategy with day-to-day operational leadership, and building strong teams that deliver results. What you’ll be doing This is a true, on-the-ground GM role with real breadth. You’ll work closely with Branch Managers and be across the day-to-day operations while keeping an eye on performance, consistency, and standards across the business. You’ll be responsible for: Leading day-to-day operations across a multi-site network Supporting and holding Branch Managers accountable to set clear expectations Driving strong commercial outcomes across commodity-linked trading environments Working closely with finance to manage budgets, forecasting, and performance reporting Representing the business with customers, suppliers, regulators, and industry partners as required Leading internal people matters with confidence, fairness, and follow-through Creating rhythm, structure and consistency across a busy, operational environment Driving a culture of safe work practices and practical compliance This role requires regular travel; operations span Hamilton, Tokoroa, Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Te Puke, Rotorua, Gisborne, and Palmerston North. You’ll be visible, present, and involved across the network (not managing from behind a desk). This isn’t your usual 40 hour per week role. You will be out and about, wherever you’re needed as the GM of this established business. What we’re looking for Tertiary qualification in business, engineering, supply chain, or equivalent practical experience You’ll bring strong, hands-on leadership experience within the recycling, transport/logistics, timber/wood processing, or heavy industrial operations industry. Someone with sound knowledge of light and heavy equipment, trucking / transport operations and metal commodities (including copper, brass, steel, and aluminium). With a workforce of 100+, you’ll also need to be a confident and credible people leader, someone who can lead a diverse, multicultural team, set expectations clearly, and follow through when things get tested. In short, you’ll be someone who is: Operationally sharp and commercially aware Calm, clear, and consistent in your leadership Comfortable making decisions, backing them, and bringing people with you Practical - you solve problems, you don’t pass them around Why Metalco? Metalco offers the chance to lead a respected business with solid foundations and genuine opportunity ahead. This is not a corporate-by-numbers role; it’s a chance to make a meaningful difference, be trusted to lead, and work alongside owners who value practical experience and good judgment.
