Plainsman Clays Limited (plainsmanclays.com) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced General Manager to join their team in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the General Manager is responsible for the strategic leadership and overall management, organization, direction & performance of the corporation and its subsidiaries in accordance with the policies established by the Board of Directors. The General Manager contributes to and implements the strategic plan, developing operational goals and objectives and reports on key performance indicators to increase revenue, profitability and growth as an organization. This position provides direct oversight and responsibility for all employees including those in sales, manufacturing, distribution and administration.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Excellent strategic leadership, time management, interpersonal, problem solving and communication skills.
  • 3-5 years experience in a for-profit business senior leadership role, that includes managing; people and human resource matters, sales and marketing, financial reporting and administrative functions, and information technology.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Business degree.
  • Management experience in the manufacturing and wholesale distribution industry and/or in a multi-location retail operation.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the clay industry.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

  • Success in a for-profit business.
  • Ability to analyze, plan and schedule complex procedures.
  • Ability to create and foster a healthy productive work environment for all staff.
  • Understanding of human resource matters including working in a unionized operation.

Responsibilities
  • Reports to the Board of Directors with respect to the implementation of the organization’s overall direction.
  • Supports the Board of Directors to develop strategic direction of the organization and to make informed decisions.
  • Leads the Strategic Plan to advance the company’s objectives and to promote revenue, profitability, and growth as an organization.
  • Works collaboratively with senior leadership to drive the financial and operational performance of the company, manages organizational resources, and ensures the proper maintenance of the plant, property and equipment.
  • Prepares and executes sales and marketing plans that meet performance targets as determined by the Board of Directors, including cultivating new and maintaining existing dealer relationships.
  • Develops the annual business plan/budget and meets deliverables as outlined by the Board of Directors.
  • Mitigates risk to the organization, while overseeing the risk management and insurance programs.
  • Manages the organization’s information technology function.
  • Reviews activity reports, budgets and financial statements to determine progress and status in attaining objectives and revises objectives and plans in accordance with current conditions.
  • Reports on financial and operating performance to the Board of Directors.
  • Creates an environment and culture that reflects the organization’s values, encouraging strong performance, rewarding excellence and productivity and ensuring safety in all operations for staff.
  • Manages staff, including hiring, firing and compensation levels.
  • Ensures compliance with all health & safety and environmental regulations while creating a safe and compliant environment for all employees.
  • Ensures the operation of the organization is compliant with legal and regulatory requirements conducted in an environmentally responsible manner.
  • Promotes positive corporate relations with external groups (including customers, suppliers, government, and the public).
  • Builds trusting relationships with key partners and stakeholders and acts as a point of contact for the company’s shareholder and the Friends of Medalta Society.
  • Attends and provides support at Board of Director meetings.
