POSITION SUMMARY

Within the School of Hospitality & Culinary Arts, the General Manager, Restaurant and Events has operational leadership and financial responsibility for the school’s food and beverage operations. These include the restaurant, café, event centre, catering and hotel suites. This position is responsible for working with the Associate Dean to assess new business ventures and is uniquely responsible for the school’s vision of integrating experiential learning within school operated hospitality operations.
This position requires the ability to function autonomously and independently and to be innovative in establishing world-class restaurant and event operations. As a member of the school’s management team, this position is relied upon to plan, organize and implement operational systems and standards to industry best practices, meeting the school’s ongoing goals and objectives.
The General Manager will work closely with the school’s Associate Dean and Academic Program Coordinators to ensure that operational and service delivery are designed to meet student learning, client and guest quality expectations. The incumbent will also work closely with the Manager of Strategic Operations to ensure the achievement of departmental revenue targets, control of expenses and the financial health of the operations.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a management or supervisory role within a food and beverage/catering/events environment.
  • A 3-year diploma/degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management or Culinary Management.
  • Supervisory/leadership experience preferably in a unionized environment which includes experience with a full range of human resources functions: staffing and recruitment, employee relations, team building and performance management.
  • Financial management experience with proficiency in managing budget and budget processes, developing financial forecasts and developing appropriate financial controls.
  • Proven negotiation, mediation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills is an asset.
  • Strong project management skills with ability to ensure timely completion of project deliverables.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Teaching experience in a post-secondary environment is an asset.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for creating the Centennial experience for guests in the on-campus restaurant, café, event centre, catering and hotel suites, by leading by example during service.
  • Effectively develop and enforce policies and procedures including set up and close down procedures, steps of service operations, for service of all outlets.
  • Inspects restaurants and outlets on an ongoing basis and takes appropriate steps to ensure facilities meet or exceed College quality performance standards at all times.
  • Resolve associate issues and/or guest conflict through service recovery and implement change when necessary.
  • Coordinate maintenance and repair of malfunctioning equipment while managing inventory of tools and equipment across all service areas to ensure operational efficiency.
  • In collaboration with applicable College stakeholders, support IEDI principles and advances our Indigenous and Africa Diaspora culture through food.
  • Schedule full- and part-time support staff based on business needs and lead semesterly student recruitment and onboarding to ensure adequate staffing levels.
  • Liaise with college departments to develop policies and logistics plans to support safe and effective operation of the Learning Enterprises.
  • Support financial planning and performance by developing annual budgets, monitoring labor and product costs, approving journal entries and POs, and reconciling monthly and quarterly financials.
  • Use forecasting and cost-benefit analysis to guide scheduling, evaluate new projects or events, and implement risk management strategies that protect financial and operational integrity.
  • Hires and manages all staff needed to operate outlets.
  • Coaches and reviews employees and students on effective service techniques, using industry best practices.
  • Develops and implements strategies and practices that support employee engagement.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Dean to engage faculty in the delivery of experiential learning.
  • Develops and implements business strategies and business plans to achieve revenue and profit goals.
  • Develops the marketing plan by keeping current on competitors regularly and working with the College Marketing team.
  • Identify and develop strategic partnerships with academic divisions, community stakeholders, and external vendors to align Learning Enterprise operations with college initiatives, enhance student experiences, and drive new revenue-generating opportunities.
