Purpose of the role
The General Practitioner post will be ideal for doctors with demonstrable interest in Emergency Medicine and who wish to build on their clinical skills, particularly in managing acute medical and psychosocial problems. They will work as part of the Emergency Medicine team, under supervision of Consultants in Emergency Medicine, assessing patients presenting to the Emergency Department with conditions suitable for General Practitioner. Patients will remain under the governance of Consultants in Emergency Medicine.

CANDIDATES WILL: -

Professional/Clinical
Be responsible for the safe and efficient assessment of patients presenting to the Emergency Department with conditions suitable for General Practitioner.
Practice as part of the Emergency Medicine team, with support from the Consultants and Registrar colleagues. Patients remain under the governance of Emergency Medicine Consultants.
Liaise effectively with other specialty teams in relation to patient referrals.
Balance service demands with their personal educational needs and those of the doctors and medical students they supervise.
Be supportive of junior medical staff, ANPs, nurses and other team members
Participate in clinical risk management, audit and research activities
Comply with departmental clinical guidelines
Comply with departmental leave policies and procedures
Demonstrate appropriate levels of professionalism in all aspects of your work and behaviour
Education and Training
Participate in mandatory and recommended training programmes in accordance with organisational / professional requirements.
Maintain and develop professional expertise and knowledge by actively engaging in continuing professional education and development.
Engage in planning and performance reviews as required with the Supervising Consultant.
Health & Safety
Comply with the policies, procedures and safe professional practice of the Irish Healthcare System by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations and standards.
Document appropriately and report any near misses, hazards and accidents and bring them to the attention of relevant / designated individual(s) in line with best practice.
Work in a safe manner with due care and attention to the safety of self and others.
Be aware of risk management issues, identify risks and take appropriate action.
Promote a culture that values diversity and respect.
Administrative
(I n consultation with the supervising Consultant)
Ensure good working practice and adherence to standards of best practice.
Promote quality by reviewing and evaluating the service, identifying changing needs and opportunities to improve services.
Assist Consultants in service development, including policy development and implementation.
Ensure the maintenance of accurate records in line with best clinical governance, the organisation’s requirements and the Freedom of Information Act, and provide reports and other information / statistics as required.
Engage in service audit and demonstrate the achievement of the service objectives.
Represent the department / profession / team at meetings and conferences as appropriate.
Keep up to date with change and developments within the Irish Health Service.

Eligibility criteria qualifications and/ or experience
Applicants are expected to have completed specialist training in General Practice and possess a relevant post-graduate qualification (e.g. MICGP). They must possess Specialist Registration in General Practice with Irish Medical Council. Prior clinical experience in Emergency Medicine is desirable.
Candidates are expected to be BLS / ACLS providers. Core requirements for this post include: a demonstrable interest in Emergency Medicine, good decision making, a broad clinical knowledge base and appropriate clinical skills, awareness of patient safety and risk management issues and the ability to work efficiently under pressure and as part of a team.
