Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we’re building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.

Responsibilities

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Colorectal Fellow to join our surgical team for a one-year fixed-term position. This is an ideal opportunity for a surgeon who has recently completed, or will complete, general surgical training and achieve FRACS in 2025. The fellowship offers the opportunity to gain further experience as an independent specialist within a supportive tertiary environment.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Independent management of patients in outpatient clinics, endoscopy, and theatre
  • Active participation in the acute general surgery on-call roster (with senior SMO backup)
  • Supervision and teaching of junior medical staff (RMOs)
  • Involvement in departmental audits and quality improvement programmes

This role is well-suited to a candidate who is clinically confident, committed to teamwork, and prepared to manage their own patient workload within a tertiary surgical unit.
