Description

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

BS/BA in a Biological Science, Medical Technology, or related field required.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

0 years of experience required, some experience in a molecular biology research laboratory setting preferred.
Experience with data acquisition, data analysis, data presentation, documentation, and operation / troubleshooting of lab instrumentation and assay systems preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Knowledge of operation and performance of basic lab equipment, i.e., centrifuge, microscopes, program incubators, etc., as well as lab safety, infection control and understanding of lab policies and procedures.
Knowledge, understanding and ability to adhere to all safety standards, i.e., emergency preparedness, chemical, infectious agents, and radioactive hazards.
Good judgment, attention to detail, problem solving, analytical and reasoning skills with ability to perform complex mathematical calculations using scientific notation.
Ability to use a wide variety of analytical techniques and instrumentation.
Ability to adapt to changing technology.
Ability to develop proficiency of good sterile technique.
Ability to work in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment within a diverse work group.
Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to effectively communicate with staff, management and physicians.
Ability to work independently on off-shifts and able to produce accurate results under time constraints.
Willingness to accommodate schedule adjustments, as well as off-shift and weekend assignments as workload dictates.

Responsibilities

TECHNICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operation and maintenance of genomics instrumentation including data acquisition for patient and research samples, calibration, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Operation and maintenance of genomics related computer hardware and software.
Preparation and maintenance of genomics related reagents.
Data analysis, documentation, and maintenance of test results according to lab procedures.
Perform tests using SOP involving multiple methodologies. These may include automated, semi-automated or manual technologies.
Prepare internal control and benchmarking standards.
Archive and retrieve samples for long-term storage and additional testing.
Accurately produce and document the processing data.
Achieve expected results within established turnaround times for MBCF services that support research goals.
Detect, troubleshoot, and correct instrument, reagent, and system failures.
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment and instrumentation. Identify the need for repair or referral as required. Calibrate equipment as scheduled
Evaluate/troubleshoot problems related to product analysis and preparation. Communicate outcomes to appropriate supervisor and/or investigator
Evaluate test results and analyze an assay for acceptability.
Communicate assay results in a timely manner.
Other duties and procedures as required or assigned.

QA/QC/REGULATORY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform quality control duties.
Perform and document QC/QA activities as defined in policies and SOPs.
Participate in validation of new instruments & methods.
Examine existing processes and problems and continuously look for way to improve them.
Participate in development of new procedures and continuous improvement activities.
Perform and report proficiency / competency testing as required.
Maintain records of procedures and resultant data, both manually and on computer.
Work within the Molecular Biology Core guidelines and adhere to all regulatory standards within the Molecular Biology Core Facilities.
Maintain and prepare laboratory work records.
Enter and retrieve data from computer databases and spreadsheets.
Other general administrative duties as required.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Foster adherence to safety compliance and exemplifies proper behavior in this regard.
Attend safety training as required. Safety compliance: follow institution’s safety procedures, wear PPE.
Use resources (supplies, time, and people) in a responsible cost-effective manner.
Organize and prioritize multiple technical tasks with max efficiency and minimal waste.
Assume responsibility to assist others in the lab on a regular basis.
