GEOPHYSICS / PHYSICS ENGINEER / SCIENTIST

A full-time Geophysics/Physics Engineer/Scientist position is available for a motivated individual to work in an integrated, results-oriented research and development Acoustic and Seismic Sensing team environment as an on-site contractor with the Mechanical Sensing Branch at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, Maryland.
Work with ARL sensor developers to build field-testable and autonomous systems. Example set of tasks:
- Analyze multi-modal geophysical signals from multiple sensing platforms
- Apply modern signal processing techniques to Army-specific and open-source geophysical datasets
- Experimental design and execution for test and evaluation of sensor-based detection systems and for gathering of high-quality target signatures for detailed analysis and classifier development
JOB DESCRIPTION:
DEVCOM ARL is looking for an early-career to mid-level scientist with experience working in seismic, acoustics and other geophysical technologies. Knowledge of sensors and sensor systems is important for this position. The ability to collect and analyze data from laboratory and field experiments is a plus. The selected candidate will work with a team of scientists and engineers to solve both basic science and army relevant problems. Developing novel techniques to benefit the warfighter is encouraged in this position, The candidate will have access to ARL’s laboratory and computational resources. The preferred work location will be at Adelphi, MD.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Familiarity with modern signal processing techniques
- Knowledge of autonomous sensor systems
- Experience pursuing external funding to advance sensor concepts in support of geophysical problems
- Proficiency in one or more of higher-level programming languages like Python, Matlab and LabView
- US citizenship mandatory
- Ability to secure a security clearance
- Bachelor’s degree in Physics or Geophysics or Engineering
- Ability to work independently
- Strong communication (both written and verbal) skills
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Interest in advancing and prioritizing national security technologies
WORK EXPERIENCE DESIRED:
- Minimum of five years at position that needed similar skill set. Some experience in carrying out basic research
- Experience in intake, conditioning, processing of datasets
- Work with software and/or hardware engineers to build working geophysical algorithms and/or sensor systems

The selected candidate will be an employee of General Technical Services LLC (GTS).
US citizenship is mandatory (to obtain the required security clearance). There may be occasional travel. GTS offers company-funded educational support for job-related training.
