DESIRED COMPETENCIES AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Three (3) years of Geotechnical Engineering experience in metals mining, including one (1) years of experience in overseeing the work of Engineers, Engineers in Training (EIT) and engineering technologist level staff.
  • Bachelor’s degree in geological/mine engineering (B.Eng).
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation and membership in the Nunavut Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientist (NAPEG) or ability to obtain same.
  • Familiarity with Deswik, Swedge, Slide, Dips, RS2, and RS3 is an asset.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct geotechnical mapping to evaluate slope stability and ensure the safety of mining operations, including both open-pit and underground environments. Participate in slope design and reconciliation for open pits and waste rock storage areas.
  • Perform regular site inspections of excavations, highwalls, stockpiles, and underground workings to monitor conditions and compliance with safety standards. Oversee slope monitoring instrumentation, including radar and prisms, to track stability and deformation.
  • Respond to Ground Control Logbook entries, addressing stability issues and recommending or implementing remedial measures. Lead rock mass characterization for open pits to guide mine design and operational strategies.
  • Assist with short-term (weekly), medium-term (3-month) mine plans and provide secondary support recommendations and prints for underground operations.
  • Oversee the installation, maintenance, and assessment of geotechnical monitoring instruments to evaluate ground stability and ensure accurate reporting. Conduct return air raise site characterization to evaluate stability in underground and surface excavations.
  • Lead quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) processes to ensure adherence to geotechnical procedures and best practices.
  • Perform CRF (cemented rockfill) testing and distribution analysis to support underground backfill operations.
  • Conduct inspections of waste rock storage areas (WSRA) and stockpiles to ensure geotechnical integrity and safety.
  • Prepare detailed reports and recommendations based on inspections, monitoring data, and site observations.
