Description

Bald Mountain is an open-pit mine with a large estimated mineral resource in the largest private mining land package in the U.S. The mine is located in White Pine County, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world, along the southern extension of the prolific Carlin trend. Bald Mountain and the nearby Round Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations.
Bald Mountain is an important contributor to the economy of northeastern Nevada and maintains a comprehensive environmental strategy including wildlife protection, habitat recovery and education.

JOB SUMMARY

The Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for providing geotechnical support to the mining and Tech Services departments to ensure that the mine operates effectively and safely. This role requires familiarity with environmental policies and the ability to maintain and support procedures that prevent accidents or injuries.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geological or Geotechnical Engineering required.
  • Postgraduate degree in Geological or Geotechnical Engineering is preferred.
  • 2-5 years of experience is preferred.
  • High level of computer literacy with Microsoft Office and general computer knowledge.
  • Knowledge of RocScience software is preferred.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to various stakeholders.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills, particularly in analyzing and interpreting geotechnical data.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, clients, and consultants.
  • Must be able to handle the physical demands of installing instrumentation, which may include packing 50 pounds across uneven surfaces.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop geotechnical design criteria to support safe and optimal mine operations.
  • Manage the installation of mine-wide geotechnical monitoring systems.
  • Facilitate the collection, analysis, and interpretation of geotechnical data.
  • Assist with continuous improvements in drilling and blast designs, ensuring compliance with mining regulations and site standards, especially regarding Geotechnical Wall Control blasting.
  • Advise planning and operations personnel on geotechnical issues in the pit.
  • Coordinate with geotechnical consultants to optimize production as it relates to Geotechnical Wall Control.
  • Ensure that all regulatory reporting requirements and licensing conditions are met.
  • Maintain Monthly Monitoring Reports and Quarterly Compliance Reports.
  • Participate in updating the Ground Control Management Plan.
  • Develop, maintain, and update Hazard Maps.
  • Effectively communicate geotechnical outcomes.
  • Provide comprehensive and timely contributions to daily and weekly production meetings.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned by the supervisor.
