Description:
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Undergraduate degree required in Civil (Geotechnical) Engineering required;
· Registered/licensed in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (P.Eng.) or nearing registration;
· 5 to 10 years of post-designation experience, preferably obtained in a consulting engineering and/or construction environment.
· 3 to 5 years of experience in a similar role is preferred;
· Experience with laboratory soil, concrete and asphalt testing procedures;
· CCIL Certification for soils, concrete and asphalt would be and asset;
· Excellent technical writing skills for preparing geotechnical engineering report;
· Understanding of contract fundamentals and experience in managing contractors under the terms of the contract;
· Solid understanding of provincial and federal regulatory requirements acquired through experience and education;
· Strong technical understanding of field data collection, instrumentation, monitoring and sampling techniques;
· Sound judgment and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and manage cost-effective, practical solutions to client problems and/or potential non-compliance situations;
· Strong ability to balance immediate and long-term work with varying priorities and deadlines;
· Comfortable in both an office and field environment, depending upon assignment priorities;
· Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with clients and co-workers;
· Leadership and conflict resolution skills;
· Possess a valid Ontario driver’s license and have access to a vehicle with valid registration and insurance.
Additional knowledge in hydrogeology, environmental or building science would be an asset.
Candidates must be able to work well in a team environment and shall possess a high level of oral and written communication skills which are essential to the position. This position may require work related travel. A valid driver’s license insurance and personal vehicle are required (work-related travel expenses will be compensated). The ideal candidate will have a significant influence on the future growth of the Geotechnical Engineering/Materials Testing Divisions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Responsibilities:
DESIGN TECHNICAL ENGINEERING DUTIES:
· Perform a variety of Geotechnical engineering work from the initial planning of a field investigation to preparation of a geotechnical report and providing consultation during the construction phase;
· Complete geotechnical design recommendations and analysis based on test hole and laboratory testing data engineering and analysis and carry out senior review of geotechnical design and analyses;
· Plan and conduct work requiring judgment in independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria;
· Provide technical guidance to intermediate to junior engineers and designers/drafters;
· Carry out variety of soil mechanics analyses and design including permissible grade raise calculations, shallow foundation, raft (mat) foundation, end bearing pile foundation and retaining wall structures;
· Coordinate, supervise and perform research and field responsibilities, such as geotechnical investigation, geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring, etc.;
· Generate and assist with preparation of deliverable documentation such as proposals, technical memorandums and reports;
· Consistently execute prescribed technical procedures and work plans;
· Develop solutions with senior personnel for complex design programs;
· Work independently and as part of a team on multiple concurrent projects, with the ability to stay within budget and meet deliverable deadlines.
CONSTRUCTION TECHNICAL DUTIES
· Soil and bedrock engineering design parameters;
· Shallow and deep foundation design;
· Slope stability analysis;
· Seepage analysis;
· Erosion Control;
· Earth Retention Systems;
· Excavation, dewatering and shoring;
· Pavement structure performance investigation and design;
· Coordinate and carry out surface and subsurface site investigations, including borehole logging, sampling of soil and rock and geological mapping;
· Aggregate laboratory testing, and;
· Filing and management of all project related field notes including some data entry and assistance with report preparation and writing.
PROJECT RESPONSIBILITIES
· Provide technical support to construction activities at the worksite, while expediting design changes for timely response to construction inquiries;
· Review/Understand drawings and specifications issued to the field and reports to Department Manager any ambiguities, interferences or errors found on drawings, specifications and assigned work;
· Advise Paterson personnel and contractors on the interpretation of drawings and specification and advises on additional details or clarifications required from project design;
· Review proposals for field changes and substitutions and recommends action to the Department Manager for approval;
· Define and implement inspection requirement for construction work to assure conformity to drawings and specifications;
· Obtain and supply field representatives and QA/QC inspectors with applicable codes, vendor drawings and installation procedures required for field work;
· Work independently and as part of a team on multiple concurrent projects, with the ability to stay within budget and meet deliverable deadlines;
· Assist field staff (as requested) in inspection of sites;
· Act as Engineering’s representative on the construction site;
· Perform any other duties that may be directed by Department Managers.
