CIMA+ Earth and Environment Department is looking for a Geotechnical Engineering Trainee for its Burlington or Mississauga office. When you join our team, you’ll be working in a multidisciplinary group comprising geotechnical and geological engineers, as well as environmental specialists.
Your expertise in soil/rock mechanics will enable you to contribute to a variety of challenging projects, including the design, rehabilitation or construction of buildings, engineering structures, hydraulic structures, earthworks, slope stability, roads, temporary and permanent retaining structures, deep and conventional foundations, and much more.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Civil Engineering with a focus on Geotechnical Engineering (Post-graduate degree is considered an asset).
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in geotechnical engineering.
  • Eligibility, intention to pursue Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario.
  • Familiarity of geotechnical software applications for slope stability, drainage, and finite element analysis.
  • Solid understanding of soil mechanics, foundation design, and construction techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with planning and execution of boreholes, test pits, CPT/DCP, in-situ testing, and groundwater/monitoring-well installations. Oversee drill rigs and contractors on site, keep detailed field notes, logs, photos, and H&S documentation.
  • Perform SPTs, collect soil/rock samples, prepare chain-of-custody forms, and log soils/rock using USCS/OPSS conventions.
  • Inspect, assess safety and upgrade earth dams.
  • Compile field/lab data, prepare figures and cross-sections, complete calculations (bearing capacity, settlement, slope stability), and draft sections of memos and reports under senior review.
  • Liaise with drillers, utility locators, and subcontractors; support scheduling, traffic control, and utility clearances; contribute to cost estimates and proposals.
  • Champion CIMA+ safety culture and comply with all site requirements and procedures.
