Description
Title/Location: GIS Analyst I – Austin, TX   Summary: The GIS Analyst I is an entry-level position responsible for supporting Formentera’s geospatial database and mapping needs. Under general supervision, this role will focus on the creation, maintenance, and quality control of spatial data related to facilities, operations, midstream assets, and environmental/regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate is a recent graduate or early-career professional with a foundational understanding of GIS principles and a strong desire to apply them in the oil and gas industry.   Responsibilities: Data Management & Maintenance (60%) * Digitize, update, and maintain spatial datasets including well pads, pipelines, facility locations, flow lines, and infrastructure corridors. * Perform regular data quality control (QC) checks to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the enterprise geodatabase. * Convert and integrate data from various sources (CAD, PDFs, GPS field data, public records) into the GIS environment. * Assist in populating and maintaining metadata for all spatial layers.   Mapping & Visualization (25%) * Produce high-quality, standard-scale maps for regulatory compliance, environmental impact assessments, engineering design reviews, and internal presentations. * Generate custom "on-demand" maps for engineers, geologists, field operations, and HSE personnel. * Assist in creating web-based mapping applications and dashboards for internal stakeholders using platforms like ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS.   Analysis & Support (10%) * Perform basic spatial analysis tasks such as buffering, clipping, proximity analysis, and site selection studies to support engineering projects and route planning. * Respond to internal data requests from various departments (Engineering, Geology, HSE, Operations). * Troubleshoot basic GIS software and data issues for end-users.   Administration (5%) * Stay current with industry trends and GIS software updates. * Adhere to company data standards and health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies. Key Competencies: * ESRI ArcGIS Suite: High proficiency in ArcGIS Pro for advanced spatial analysis, data management, and cartography. * Data Management: Demonstrated ability to create, edit, and maintain complex geodatabases, ensuring data integrity, accuracy, and proper metadata documentation. * Automation & Efficiency: Competency in using Python, ArcPy, or ModelBuilder to automate repetitive tasks, improve workflows, and conduct advanced spatial analysis. * Web GIS: Familiarity with ArcGIS Online/Portal to create and share interactive web maps and applications for broader organizational use.   Required Qualifications: * 1-5 years of professional GIS experience. Internship experience in the energy, utilities, or environmental sectors is a plus. * Proficiency with Esri ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro) is required. * Familiarity with geodatabase topology and data modeling concepts. * Basic understanding of coordinate systems and map projections (State Plane, UTM, etc.). * Experience with GPS data collection and processing is preferred. * Familiarity with oil and gas data standards (e.g., PODS, APDM) is advantageous but not required. * Proficient computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office products. AI or GeoAI experience or knowledge is a plus. * Flexibility to work beyond core hours to complete projects. * Trustworthy and dependable.   Preferred Qualifications: * Intermediate knowledge and understanding of GIS database design. * Intermediate knowledge and understanding of oil and gas drilling, completions, and production operations. * Knowledge and understanding of GIS developer languages (ArcPy, Python, Arcade, JavaScript).   Physical Requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation) * This position is primarily sedentary, with regular requirements to communicate verbally and listen.
