JOB SUMMARY:
The GIS Technician position involves performing essential surveying and mapping duties that are critical for various applications such as construction, mapmaking, boundary location, and zoning. The technician will be responsible for obtaining and processing data that is vital for creating accurate and detailed maps. This role requires a keen attention to detail and a strong understanding of geographic information systems (GIS) to ensure that the data collected is both accurate and comprehensive. This position will report directly to the Director of Information Technology.
In this position, the GIS Technician will calculate mapmaking information and utilize various source data, including surveying notes, aerial photography, and satellite data to create maps that depict topographical features, political boundaries, and other significant geographical elements.
The technician will also be tasked with verifying the accuracy and completeness of the maps produced, ensuring that they meet the required standards for usability in various projects. This role is integral to the planning and execution of projects that rely on precise geographical data.
EQUIPMENT/LOCATION/ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
· The employee will work out doors mostly, and indoors at Shelbyville City Hall or other locations designated as their primary location of work. However, the employee will be required to work at other departments to accomplish tasks.
· The employee will be required to operate computer systems, including several programs as required to complete daily tasks.
· The employee may be required to operate telephones, scanners, and copy machine, GPS data collection devices.
· Sufficient visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze data and figures, extensive reading, and data entry functions.
· The position also requires intermittent sitting, standing, stooping, and walking and may expose the employee to loud noise.
· Employee may need to routinely lift 20 lbs. and up to 50lbs. occasionally.
· Employee will be exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent course work at a technical school in geographic information systems, geography, planning, civil engineering, computer science, or related field, or 5+ years of proven experience
· Experience with ArcGIS Pro for at least 1 year
· Understanding GIS software, topology/geometric network techniques, data model formats, and data conversion practices
· Working knowledge of GIS related software, desktop mapping, web mapping, GPS, and database/spreadsheet applications
· Familiarity with relational databases
· Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage time across multiple projects and deadlines
· Good communication skills
· Experience with ESRI suite of products, including ArcGIS Pro
· Knowledge of CAS and related software and GIS/CADD interoperability
· Proficient in use of tablet and handheld electronic devices
Preferred:
· Part 107 License
· Experience with drones and LiDAR systems

1. The GIS Technician will be responsible for gathering, producing, maintaining, analyzing, and reporting Geographic Information System (GIS) data.
2. This role involves preparing and updating maps and exhibits using GIS datasets, utilizing GPS for asset verification, and supporting asset management through a GIS-centric system.
3. The technician will also engage in continuous learning to stay updated with evolving GIS technology.
4. Operate computer workstation to create and update maps for internal and external use utilizing the latest ESRI software.
5. Convert data collected from field operations into GIS database with proper and accurate spatial location.
6. Maintain GIS attribute tables from data collected through various sources.
7. Assist with creation, maintenance, and utilization of GIS-centric asset management system.
8. Utilize mapping grade GPS to field verify and accurately locate assets and update GIS data accordingly.
9. Configure GPS settings to collect location data within horizontal and vertical tolerance limits.
10. Continue to develop expertise in GIS.
11. Participate in workshops, training, or vendor presentations introducing evolving GIS technology, new products and upgrades.
12. Perform other related functions to support the GIS program and other duties as needed across the City.
