Responsibilities

YOUR ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As the appointed GMR 2.1 appointee, you will ensure the safe operation and maintenance of machinery in compliance with South Africa’s General Machinery Regulations (GMR) under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act). You will collaborate with engineering, facilities, service providers, contractors, and operational teams to ensure equipment and facilities meet GMR 2.1 and other safety standards. Your role includes enhancing Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) performance and promoting a culture of compliance.

YOU WILL BE MAINLY ACCOUNTABLE FOR:

  • Accept legal appointments in terms of General Machinery Regulation 2.1 to ensure full compliance with applicable legislation and internal standards.
  • Collaborate with engineering, facilities, service providers, contractors and operations teams to address all GMR 2.1-related matters.
  • Ensure safe operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment.
  • Effective precautionary measures are developed and implemented to protect people whilst performing work, maintenance, cleaning or adjustment work.
  • Oversee the implementation of engineering controls and statutory inspections.
  • Liaise with the Department of Employment and labour and ensure compliance with all legal requirements.
  • Lead incident investigations related to machinery and ensured corrective actions are implemented.
  • Facilitate electrical safety and technical forums across ABB local divisions.
  • Apply your technical expertise to support the business with practical solutions and informed advice.
  • Identify, assess and mitigate risks to ensure that appropriate safety measures are in place.
  • Conduct risk assessments and safety audits for electrical systems and installations.

Qualifications for the Role

  • Must have Matric and a National Diploma or Bachelor’s in Technology or BSc Degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) – Factories (advantageous or required depending on site/facility).
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Proven experience in HSE management and legal compliance.
  • Strong knowledge of OHS Act, GMR, and relevant SANS standards
