We support school governors at their meetings in schools across the city, we provide advice, guidance and training for maintained schools and academy trust local governing boards. Our aim is to support them to be as effective as possible carrying out the three core functions of governance:

  • ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction for the school;
  • holding headteachers and leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
  • overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.

Responsibilities

You will support governing boards to operate effectively and remain compliant by providing independent advice on legal, procedural, and regulatory matters, keeping the board updated on changes, and ensuring meetings are well organised with accurate records. You will manage administrative processes, support governor induction and training, and foster open communication and professional relationships within the board. You work will be essential in supporting robust and effective school governance. A flexible approach to working hours is essential as the role involves evening meetings which are clustered during term time. Due to the nature of this role, discretion and confidentiality are vital.
About you This rewarding role supports governors across multiple schools to achieve positive outcomes for pupils. While formal clerk qualifications aren’t required, experience in governance or strategic development is valuable. School experience is a bonus, not a must. We’re looking for a driven, detail-focused professional with strong organisation, IT, and interpersonal skills. You’ll build trusted relationships with educators and colleagues, confidently handling confidential matters and accurately recording complex school business. A ‘can-do’ attitude and alignment with city council values are key.
