DESCRIPTION & DETAILS:

Subject to final approval, the Department of Plant Sciences is offering you a 75% appointment as a Graduate Research Fellow from 8/1/2025 to 6/30/2026 under the supervision of Dr. Richard Horsley. This appointment cannot exceed one fiscal year at a time and may be renewed for up to five years. Continuation of this appointment depends on progress toward graduation, including your ongoing enrollment in the graduate degree program with at least three credits per semester and no more than 18 course credits per academic year, as well as no more than six credits in two summer sessions while employed. Dissertation and research credits are not included in the course credit limits but may be used to fulfill the minimum requirements.
The stipend for this appointment will be $48,204, and the research responsibilities will include Collecting field data; harvesting yield trials with a plot combine; making head selections in F2, F3, and F4 materials; cleaning harvested seed and spikes; collecting data on harvested grain, including yield, kernel plumpness, and grain protein; preparing seed for submission to the USDA-ARS barley and malt laboratory for quality evaluation; preparing materials for sowing in off-season nurseries in New Zealand and Arizona; assisting in selecting parents for crossing; sowing seed in the greenhouse for crossing blocks; making crosses in the greenhouse; sowing and harvesting materials to determine resistance to pre-harvest sprouting; collecting leaf tissue for DNA extraction; threshing and cleaning materials from off-season nurseries; packaging seed for yield trials across North Dakota; setting up seeds in cartridges for sowing early generation progeny rows; setting up seed for F2 nurseries; sowing yield trials and progeny rows using a GPS-guided seeder and tractor; managing weed control and management in all yield trials and nurseries; and annually completing all required safety training, including baseline, greenhouse, and laboratory safety modules needed for your research.
