Description Position Summary The Graduate Vocational Nurse (GVN) provides direct nursing care to residents in a long-term care nursing home setting under the supervision of a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) or Registered Nurse (RN). The GVN practices within the scope permitted by the state Nurse Practice Act while awaiting licensure and supports the delivery of safe, compassionate, and person-centered care. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provide direct nursing care to residents in accordance with established policies, procedures, and care plans Assist with admission, discharge, and transfer processes Monitor and document residents’ vital signs, intake and output, and overall condition Administer medications and treatments only as permitted by state law and facility policy, under appropriate supervision Observe residents for changes in physical or mental condition and promptly report findings to the supervising nurse Assist with wound care, catheter care, and other nursing procedures within scope Document care accurately and timely in the electronic health record Respond appropriately to resident needs, call lights, and emergencies Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to promote resident well-being Support activities of daily living (ADLs) as needed, including bathing, dressing, toileting, and mobility assistance Maintain infection control standards and follow safety protocols Provide emotional support and education to residents and families within scope of practice Supervision Works under the direct supervision of an RN or LVN Does not function independently or assume charge nurse responsibilities Scope of practice and duties are limited to those permitted for a GVN under applicable state regulations Requirements Qualifications Education: Graduate of an approved Vocational Nursing Program Eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN Licensure/Certification: Graduate Vocational Nurse status recognized by the state Current CPR/BLS certification Experience: Previous long-term care or clinical experience preferred, but not required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Basic nursing skills and clinical judgment appropriate for a graduate nurse Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision Strong communication and documentation skills Compassionate, patient-centered approach to care Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced long-term care environment Knowledge of infection control and resident safety principles Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift residents as needed with or without assistance Ability to perform repetitive tasks and respond to emergencies Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for safe resident care Work Environment Long-term care / skilled nursing facility Exposure to medical equipment, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases Shift work including weekends and holidays as scheduled
