GRAPHIC DESIGNER, UNIVERSITY RELATIONS

Primary Purpose: To provide design, layout and editorial solutions for the production of digital and print media within University Relations and the communications office in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Saskatchewan. This work will help build an outstanding local and national reputation for the college in support of the university’s strategic goals.
Nature of Work: Reporting directly to the Graphic Design Specialist, University Relations, this position is responsible for creative concept development, design, layout and editorial services for the production of print and digital materials; recommending new trends and technologies in communication strategies, including social media; and aiding the campus community to effectively communicate through a strong visual identity platform and a range of College of Arts and Science and USask branded materials. The Graphic Designer works closely with communicators and members of the campus community in the production of print, online, video and interactive communications. The environment is complex, fast-paced and competitive with numerous strict deadlines. This position effectively functions in an environment requiring high confidentiality. Consequence of error is significant to the profile and reputation of the university.

Responsibilities
  • Provide the creative concept development, design, layout and editorial services for a wide range of high profile digital and print communication and marketing pieces that promote the university and its initiatives
  • Work with the College of Arts and Science Communications Office to maintain and develop client relationships, meet design requests related to promotional needs and opportunities, endorse USask visual identity standards and implement them creatively
  • Coordinate production with internal and external suppliers, proofing final outputs and following up with measurements of success
  • Maintain the use of current strategies, while researching, recommending and implementing leading trends and technologies
  • Work collaboratively with University Relations and the College of Arts and Science to achieve overarching university priorities
  • Other duties as assigned
    Education: Post-secondary degree or diploma in Fine Arts, Visual Arts or Graphic Design. Training in communications, marketing, advertising or public relations. An equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered.
    Experience: At least three years of professional design experience in both print and digital media, proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, with experience providing print-ready files to a variety of vendors, and digital files to web and video providers. Experience in a fast-paced communications and marketing environment. Knowledge of and skills in social media platforms. Photography skills would be an asset. Knowledge of the University of Saskatchewan and academic environments, and an understanding of communication strategies and principles with proven experience in applying them in a complex environment and achieving results are assets.
    Skills: Proven expertise in publications production including design, layout and pre-press work; demonstrated excellence in all aspects of print and digital design; proven ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines; keen attention to detail; demonstrated ability to think strategically and execute creatively; extensive experience and demonstrated proficiency using Adobe Creative Suite in a Macintosh environment; demonstrated creative and artistic abilities; exceptional writing and editing skills; demonstrated ability to exercise diplomacy, judgment and tact; demonstrated ability to balance a demanding workload, multitask and adjust to changing priorities; experience working with external suppliers; effective time management skills; excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
