The Stop Community Food Centre Job Description Green Barn Supervisor Non-Unionized position ABOUT THE STOP The Stop Community Food Centre’s mission is to increase access to healthy food in a manner that maintains dignity, builds community, and challenges inequality. From its origins 40+ years ago as one of Canada's first food banks, The Stop has since grown into a vibrant community centre that uses food as a gateway to addressing many issues, including poverty, the environment, social isolation, and health in one of Toronto’s lowest-income neighbourhoods. The Stop is accredited by Imagine Canada for excellence in non-profit accountability, transparency, and governance. THE OPPORTUNITY: Reporting to the Green Barn Manager, the Green Barn Supervisor is an integral part of The Stop's leadership team and is responsible for the supervision of our activities at the Green Barn Site, including the Farmer’s Market; urban agriculture programs, community gardens, Indigenous land sovereignty work, and social enterprise. The Stop’s focus on urban agriculture programming includes a year-round greenhouse, several community gardens, a community kitchen, a classroom and several programs. The ideal candidate will be production driven, but also socially engaged and excited about opening up our spaces and building partnerships. We are looking for an experienced supervisor who shares our commitment to community, food security, and social justice. KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: As part of The Stop’s leadership team, the successful candidate will: Maintain and monitor adherence of Health and Safety protocols, Remote Work Policies, and any other applicable policies Monitor compliance and contribute to development and updating of all operating procedures in our programming and growing spaces (e.g., Greenhouse and community gardens); Along with Green Barn Manager, supervise new staff, including seasonal student workers, relief staff, and Indigenous work-programs’ trainees; Comfortable and able to implement disciplinary procedures and conflict resolution within the existing agency policies and collective agreement; Work closely with Director of Programs and Evaluation to support yearly impact evaluation; Work collaboratively to ensure effective program and service delivery, and communication between teams and sites; Build and maintain positive relationships with community partners, and collaborate with the Green Barn Manager and Facilities & Operations Manager to liaise with the ArtHubs Wychwood Barns building operator. Lead, motivate, and support our diverse program staff in the development and delivery of programs; Oversight of administrative needs, human resources, and day-to-day sight operations; Support the creation and oversight of annual budgets to ensure responsible financial management and alignment with program goals. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES: Program Planning and Implementation Support program planning, development, and implementation with staff, including setting and achieving yearly targets; Mentor staff to develop and implement effective outreach and recruitment strategies that engage diverse community members. Work with program staff at The Stop’s Green Barn site to ensure that all programs reflect The Stop's mission Collaborate with program staff to ensure programs achieve their objectives through effective planning, outreach, and participant recruitment. Ensure regular staff meetings at the Green Barn to review progress, address challenges, and maintain effective communication. Identify, pursue, and maintain strategic partnerships with local agencies and community groups to expand the reach and impact of programs. Contribute to the development and application of policies and procedures that promote a safe, inclusive, and democratic environment at the Green Barn site. Work from Tuesday to Saturday between November 1 and March 1 annually as part of seasonal operating hours. Provide regular program updates to the Green Barn Manager and/or Director of Programs and Evaluation Work regularly on Saturdays to supervise the Farmer’s Market year-round Human Resources: Participate in hiring and orientation of program staff Ensure staff are meeting performance expectations and apply progressive discipline when appropriate. Ensure that all program staff are familiar with and adhere to The Stop’s operating principles and policies Administer policies in compliance with relevant employment legislation (OHSA, HRC, ESA) Oversee the tracking of staff work time, ensuring that hours, lieu time, vacation, and sick leave align with organizational policies and limits. Facilitate resolution of problems, issues and concerns in programs and between members of staff team Work with staff to ensure community members behave in safe, respectful ways, intervening when necessary to enforce Stop policies Work with Volunteer Program and community volunteers to ensure adequate and efficient operational capacity; ensure volunteers are onboarded, trained, supported, properly scheduled, and recognized Administration: Participate in shaping and implementing program communications strategies to enhance outreach and visibility. Develop positive relationships with funders and project partners Co-ordinate the development of program budgets and monitor program spending Work with administrative staff to ensure that building operations run smoothly at the Green Barn Steward constructive relationships and maintain open lines of communication with market partners, supporters, and external stakeholders (including Artshubs, Parks and Recreation, Wychwood Barns Community Association, City Councillor, etc.) Monitor budget performance and prepare reports to support financial accountability and planning. Support completion of mid-year and year-end reports to support fundraising activities Contribute to the writing and submission of documentation and reports as needed General: Demonstrate the ability to collaborate in a team environment Willingness to work in the elements (heat, rain, cold, temperatures, etc.) May be required to work irregular hours as needed, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends Maintain constructive communication with other staff at The Stop and local agencies Ensure knowledge of The Stop’s mission, ensuring that the market operations reflects The Stop’s principles, policies and procedures (e.g. Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Policy, Anti-Harassment Policy, Farmers’ Market Code of Conduct) Represent The Stop constructively when engaging with the public, other organizations and media Contribute to writing program reports and funding proposals Participate in broader planning and team-building activities at the agency May require lifting up to 50 lbs QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS: A bachelor's degree in business management, events, marketing, food services, or a related field and/or relevant experience in event management, marketing, agriculture, or a related field is valuable. This could include work in farmers' markets, community events, or kitchen management Demonstrated experience leading agricultural production and urban agriculture initiatives, with a focus on community engagement, education, and sustainable growing practices. Basic financial knowledge to manage program budgets, vendor fees, and market expenses Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects within tight timelines. Experience in tracking sales, handling transactions, and maintaining financial records Ability to supervise and lead a team of vendors, volunteers, and staff Ability to establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders such as local farmers, vendors, community organizations, and government entities, etc. through effective communication Familiarity with local regulations, permits, health and safety standards, and other legal requirements for operating a farmers' market Demonstrated experience in planning and executing events, including coordinating equipment and logistics. Proficiency in using various marketing channels such as social media, websites, and local advertising to promote the market A genuine interest in supporting local agriculture, promoting sustainable practices, and contributing to the community's well-being Strong leadership and partnership-building abilities Experience supervising staff within a Unionized environment is an asset Experience working with diverse community members Strong written and verbal skills Ability to work in Microsoft Office suite Experience in multi-site organizations especially beneficial Passionate and knowledgeable of issues related to poverty, social justice, food justice, community development, urban agriculture, food security, and Indigenous land sovereignty Certification in non-violent crisis intervention or CPI and First Aid are assets Hours: 37.5 hours/week (Permanent/Full-time) Primary Location: 601 Christie St. Please note: Green Barn supervision often involves physically demanding tasks such as setting up booths, moving equipment, and being on your feet for long periods.
