Life at Mission Australia
When you join the team at Mission Australia, you become part of a community who are determined to end homelessness and ensure people in need can thrive. United by our Christian purpose and values, we advocate for a fairer Australia, to meet the growing needs of people across the country. Together we’re building hope and possibility for all.
Your opportunity
We are seeking a dedicated and hands-on Facilities and Maintenance Officer to join our team full time. In this role, you will play a key part in creating safe, welcoming, and well-maintained spaces across multiple sites, directly supporting Participants and staff. Your work will make a meaningful difference in the daily lives of the people we support, ensuring every site is not only functional and clean but also a space where Participants feel safe, valued, and encouraged on their journey.
You will carry out a variety of important tasks, including groundskeeping, minor repairs, managing equipment, and supporting trades, all while ensuring compliance with workplace health and safety standards. From maintaining gardens and lawns to clearing debris and keeping buildings in excellent condition, your attention to detail and proactive approach will help create environments that promote wellbeing, growth, and community. This role is perfect for someone who takes pride in their work, enjoys practical hands-on tasks, and wants to contribute to an organisation that makes a positive impact every day.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- Maintain all sites to a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and functionality to support Participants and staff.
- Perform groundskeeping tasks, including mowing lawns, trimming trees and bushes, and clearing debris to create safe and welcoming environments.
- Carry out minor repairs and general maintenance of buildings, including doors, walls, floors, painting, plumbing, and lighting.
- Manage and maintain equipment, tools, and materials, ensuring proper storage, upkeep, and logging in the asset register.
- Support tradespeople in accessing facilities to complete larger maintenance or repair tasks.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with workplace health and safety policies, including safe handling and storage of chemicals and dangerous goods.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance work, repairs, and inspections, and report any issues or concerns to management promptly.
Requirements for success
- A current Working with Children Check and a valid driver’s license with the ability to drive a vehicle with a trailer.
- Extensive experience in facilities maintenance, groundskeeping, or horticulture, including practical skills in plumbing, carpentry, and general repairs.
- Physically capable of performing hands-on tasks such as lifting, moving equipment, and outdoor maintenance.
- Skilled in the safe use, storage, and handling of chemicals and tools.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks across several sites.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills, with a proactive approach to completing maintenance tasks and reporting issues.
- Friendly and professional interpersonal skills, able to collaborate with staff, trades, and Participants effectively, while contributing positively to the workplace culture.
Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
Your benefits
- Rewarding work – every day you know you’re making a real difference
- Not-for-profit salary packaging, reducing your tax
- Free external, confidential counselling
- Volunteering opportunities
- Opportunity to purchase additional annual leave
- Extra leave including: Mission Australia Thank You Day & Work Anniversary Day off
