POSITION SUMMARY: Group Exercise instructors support the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Candidates for this position are expected to instruct and inspire members by implementing high quality group exercise classes targeted to diverse abilities/populations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Lead energizing, fun, and safe group classes that correspond with YMCA mission and goals. 2. Maintain 80% attendance in all regularly scheduled classes. Start and end classes at times established by Group Exercise Coordinator. 3. Clock in and clock out per method(s) established by Group Exercise Coordinator. Retain attendance statistics for classes per method(s) established by Group Exercise Coordinator. 4. Follow YMCA of Greater Whittier policies and procedures. Respond to emergency situations according to EAP procedure. 5. Report problems with equipment in a timely manner to Group Exercise Coordinator; troubleshoot immediate problems when necessary. 6. Maintain professional certifications for Zumba Gold class. Remain current with CPR, First Aid and AED certifications. Stay abreast of fitness and wellness trends via continuing education. 7. Build an effective and engaging rapport with members consistent with the YMCA mission and goals. Encourage member interaction and participation across YMCA of Greater Whittier programs. 8. Represent the YMCA positively in the community; build supportive relationships with YMCA staff. 9. Attend staff meetings and trainings as required. 10. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements Qualifications 1. High School Diploma. 2. At least 18 years of age. 3. Background check required. 4. A minimum of one-year experience teaching Group Exercise classes preferred. 5. Current certification in Zumba Gold format. 6. YMCA of Greater Whittier specific trainings/certifications required within 30 days of employment. Arrive 15 minutes before class start time to setup class and survey area for safety. 2. Perform all physical aspects associated with scheduled group exercise class; demonstrate modifications as well as advanced movements/techniques to accommodate all fitness levels and diverse abilities; demonstrate proper technique and form; provide feedback regarding technique and form of members throughout class. 3. Adjust instructional style/pedagogy in response to feedback from members and/or Group Exercise Coordinator. 4. Instruct a minimum of 80 percent of regularly scheduled classes; inform Group Exercise Coordinator of any rescheduling needs in a timely manner; utilize Group Exercise scheduling system/technology as directed by Group Exercise Coordinator. 5. Respond to incidents/accidents according to EAP procedure and methods established by the YMCA of Greater Whittier.
Responsibilities
The Group Exercise Instructor leads energizing and safe group classes while maintaining attendance and reporting on class statistics. They are responsible for building rapport with members and representing the YMCA positively in the community.
