The Dispatcher is responsible for ensuring trains and crews move safely and efficiently across a railroad’s network and for making sure no train is delayed unnecessarily. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Supervise the safe and efficient movement of trains and equipment on track utilizing the tools provided and in accordance with the rules. Ability to communicate with a clear voice via radio and telephone to crew member and other employees including the ability to hear and discern incoming radio transmissions. Inform employees working on track of conditions or information impacting their duties. Maintain required records of on track movement, crew duty times and other information as required. Communicate with various departments and employees regarding the status of trains, passengers, maintenance of way activities, service interruptions and other issues. Work Environment: Willing to work flexible schedule with occasional overtime hours, as needed. Must be able to climb and descend one flight of stairs to the dispatcher office multiple times per day. Majority of work is indoor office environment with occasional outdoor work in all weather conditions while briefing crew members or other employees. The Dispatcher position may be stressful at times. The successful candidate must have the ability to make safe and sound decisions under stressful circumstances. Dispatchers may occasionally be required to line switches in the yard, open gates for passengers or trains, and protect street crossings while trains depart or arrives in Bryson City. QualificationsEducation, Skill and Experience: Prior experience working as a Train Dispatcher or Control Operator is highly preferred. Demonstrated ability to build and safely execute railroad operating plans for train movement and maintenance of way activities in compliance with railroad rules and regulations. Must possess the ability to lead teams of employees as they complete their daily activities. Familiarity with Dispatching Software, issuance of track authority and associated computer skills. Solid understanding of Railroad rules and regulations. Commitment to Safety as a core competency.
