Guest Designer -Projections The University of Pittsburgh Department of Theatre Arts seeks a Projection Designer for our upcoming production of The Trees by Agnes Borinsky, directed by Natasha Cole. The production runs February 20 – March 1, 2026 in the Rauh Studio Theatre. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES • Reports directly to the Head of Design Tech and Management of Theatre Arts. • Work in residence for at least 1 week prior to technical rehearsals through opening night. • Read the script • Provide research, sketches, and design materials to clearly communicate ideas to the director and production team. • Conduct research, provide design materials, and work in collaboration with the director and the other members of the design/technical team in developing a viable production concept. • Design and specify projection delivery systems, collaborating with the Technical Director, Production Director, and Director of Lighting, Sound, and Projections. • Oversee installation, focusing, and programming of projection equipment and cues. • Maintain adequate communication with all members of the production team, integrating the design into the rehearsal process, adapting the design as the production evolves in rehearsal, and finalizing the design during technical rehearsals. • Attend all required design meetings, production meetings, and rehearsals through opening night. • Arrange for the acquisition or creation of the content of the projection design, the design of the systems needed to reproduce/reinforce the design in the theatre, and the configuration of those systems in the space. • Create a projection plot and obtain a copy of the ground plan from the scenic designer to determine equipment placement. • Adhere to the budget • Stick to deadlines for each phase of the design process, which are provided in the production calendar and based on the needs of the production • Meet with the technical director to schedule any work time needed in the theater • Assist in training the board operator at tech rehearsal • Attend all tech rehearsals and fix projection cues as needed • Set up and operate projection equipment during rehearsals and live performances • Adjust and troubleshoot projection systems to ensure optimal performance • Manage project timelines and meet production deadlines REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS • Bachelor's degree in theater production, visual arts, or related field • Strong portfolio showcasing previous projection design work • Proven experience as a Projection Designer or similar role • Experience with 3D mapping and projection techniques • Proficiency in software programs such as Isadora, Maya, Adobe After Effects, and QLab • Effective interpersonal and communication skills • Familiarity with stagecraft and theater production processes • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to fast-paced environments • Strong understanding of projection technology and equipment • Creative problem-solving skills and attention to detail • Experience with video editing and graphic design software • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities • Effectively handle projection equipment and set up in various environments APPOINTMENT DATE: 01/12/2026
