Join us as a Hands-on Biomedical Research Scientist at the Bio/Micro Systems Centre (B/MSC), a cutting-edge research initiative based at the University of Twente campus in Enschede. B/MSC is a joint innovation effort between the University of Twente (UT) and TNO, launched in 2024 to drive internationally distinctive research in scalable bio/microtechnology solutions. Rooted in the strengths of the Twente region and industry needs, our mission is to accelerate the development of enabling technologies and advanced Organ-on-Chip applications for drug development and toxicity testing towards market adoption. By co-locating experts from biology and microsystems manufacturing, we aim to push the boundaries of innovation contributing to a healthier, safer world.

WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU

For the Joint Innovation Centre B/MSC, We are looking for a highly motivated and proactive Hands-on Biomedical Research Scientist with:

  • a PhD in Cell Biology, Tissue Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or a relevant field or a MSc in a relevant field with 2-4 years of experience.
  • Hands-on experience with organ-on-a-chip, cell culturing, as well as microphysiological systems and model innovations thereof, and preferable experience with biosensing and data analysis.
  • Strong interest in industrial application of microphysiological systems with a proactive and motivated attitude, eager to explore new ideas.
  • Ability to work independently and at the same time being a strong team player.
  • Customer-focused mindset with a commitment to providing tailored solutions.
  • Strong interdisciplinary skills.
  • A strong ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment and a passion for collaboration.
  • Result-driven, creative, flexible, and excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
Responsibilities

As a Hands-on Biomedical Research Scientist you will join a new team of experts from both UT and TNO to kickstart the roadmap activities of the B/MSC at the UT campus in Enschede. While kickstarting, you will need to align with stakeholders of the B/MSC from both mother organizations. Success of your technological breakthrough will immediately translate into success of the innovation centre. Join us and be part of this pioneering endeavour.
Your direct employer for this full-time research scientist position is TNO Health & Work, note however that your place of work will be at the University of Twente in Enschede.

Your main activities will be:

  • Join R&D activities on microphysiological platform development for drug development and toxicity testing in the laboratories of the University of Twente in Enschede under the B/MSC joint initiative.
  • Contributing to hands-on laboratory work such as cell culturing, and reporting results in a critical manner.
  • Support the technical program roadmap and projects by managing / being involved with customer projects by translating relevant state-of-art research topics into experimental plans and their execution. and customer proposal writing in the Regional, National and European context.
  • File patents based on generated ideas and results.
  • Communicate results in internationally renowned conferences and, importantly, to B/MSC customers.
