Description
Job Description At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features. Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale. The Role We are seeking a high‑performing Hardware Development Engineer to plan, develop, and execute engine lubrication and ventilation tests in a world‑class development facility. Responsibilities include hands‑on test bench work, data analysis, calibration support, and driving test efficiency through data reduction and virtualization of lab activities. This assignment requires creativity, initiative, and independent judgment, as well as effective cross‑organizational teamwork. What You’ll Do Test & Bench Ownership Execute engine lube and vent testing across multiple engine programs. Develop, implement, and execute first‑time capable tests for hardware development and validation on engine dynamometers and test benches. Lead diagnosis and resolution of issues that occur during test setup, execution, and post‑test investigations. Track and report test status, issues, and risks to support program milestones and decision making. Ensure all testing is conducted in accordance with GM safety, quality, and procedural standards. Data, Tools & Virtualization Create, maintain, and utilize post‑processing tools (e.g., Excel, MATLAB) to assure data quality and improve test efficiency. Analyze data to optimize test plans, reduce test time, and support virtual model development and correlation. Identify and implement data reduction opportunities, including standardization of data sets and automation of routine analysis tasks. Contribute to the migration of lab‑based activities to virtual methods, partnering with analysis and virtualization teams. Collaboration & Continuous Improvement Collaborate with facilities, technical specialists, calibration teams, hardware release engineers, and other stakeholders to improve process and test efficiency. Participate in the pursuit of test reduction and elimination, working with design, analysis, and program teams to identify where physical testing can be streamlined, replaced, or virtualized. Support continuous improvement of standard work, procedures, and documentation for engine lube/vent testing. Leadership & Mentoring Train, mentor, and develop new engineers and co‑ops/rotators on bench operation, safety, and standard work. Provide technical guidance on engines hardware, lube/vent system function, test methods, and data interpretation to peers and partners. Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) BS in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related engineering discipline. 5+ years of experience in automotive engineering with engine knowledge (diesel or gasoline). Demonstrated drive for results in a laboratory or development environment. Strong planning and problem‑solving skills, including the ability to manage multiple test activities in parallel. Strong oral and written communication skills. High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, build peer relationships, and work independently with minimal direction. Proven ability to prioritize work and resources, balancing urgent program needs with long‑term improvements. Proficient with computer and data acquisition systems used in test environments. Experience in data analysis to optimize testing, assess hardware performance, or support model correlation. Experience using and creating MATLAB scripts for data analysis and post‑processing. What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) Experience with AVL PUMA/IndiCom and ETAS INCA software. Exposure to engine calibration in test cell and/or vehicle environments. 7+ years of experience in automotive engineering with engine development or testing. Hands‑on experience with engine dynamometer setup and testing. Experience with engine hardware and subsystems, including lubrication and ventilation systems. Work Location & Model This role is expected to be lab‑based/hybrid, with significant time spent on‑site in the Pontiac test facility supporting hands‑on bench activities. Specific onsite expectations and hybrid details will be defined by the hiring manager based on business needs. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.
