Hawaiian Ambassador will work to ensure that programs (performances, crafts, classes, dance, lectures and commentary) on board the NCLA fleet will educate, entertain and enthuse, our guests and crew about the rich culture and history of the Hawaiian Islands and its people. Under the direction of the Cruise Director, the Hawaiian Ambassador is responsible for participation and leadership of all assigned activities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The Hawaiian Ambassador is responsible for creating an effective Hawaiian program for all Guests and ensures that each event takes place safely and promptly as scheduled. Under the direction of the Cruise Director, the Hawaiian Ambassador is responsible for participation and leadership of all assigned activities. The Hawaiian Ambassador is responsible for teaching Guests how to make Fresh Flower & Kukui Nut Leis as well as teaching all Hawaiian Art’s & Craft classes. The Hawaiian Ambassador is responsible for sharing the History of all the crafts and the meaning of Aloha, ‘Ohana, and sharing Leis in all the Arts and Crafts Classes. The Hawaiian Ambassador is responsible for teaching Guests how to dance the hula and history behind Hula Dancing. The Hawaiian Ambassador is responsible for preparing guests for a main stage Hula Graduation Show. The Hawaiian Ambassador is responsible for working with the Band and Kama’aina Duo in order to plan, rehearse, perform, and host a Hawaiian Show called Kanikapila. The Hawaiian Ambassador is responsible for giving morning Port Lectures introducing each island, activities to do on each island, history and culture of each island, while cross-promoting for Shore Excursions available on each island. The Hawaiian Ambassador is responsible for giving Destination Lectures that are focused on the history and culture of Hawaii, topics to include: Hawaiian History, Hawaiian Language, and Hawaiian Culture. The Hawaiian Ambassador is responsible for narrations during the planned scenic voyages during the cruise, specifically the Na Pali Coastline and Kilauea Volcano. The Hawaiian Ambassador is responsible for creating a Hawaiian Entertainment Grid and completing a Voyage Report at the end of the voyage. The Hawaiian Ambassador is responsible for the ordering and safe storage of all Hawaiian arts & crafts supplies. It is the responsibility of the Hawaiian Ambassador to constantly maintain organization of all storage areas. It is the responsibility of the Hawaiian Ambassador to be accessible to and approachable with the guests. He/She must be capable of being a patient listener while making the guests feel at home. Problem solving and conflict resolution are the direct responsibility of the Hawaiian Ambassador following shipboard guidelines and under the direction of management. It is the responsibility of the Hawaiian Ambassador to always represent Hawaii and share the Aloha spirit with all Guests and crew members. It is the responsibility of the Hawaiian Ambassadors to work as a cohesive unit. It is the responsibility of the Hawaiian Ambassador to aid in the training of new Hawaiian Ambassador team members. It is the responsibility of the Hawaiian Ambassadors to be visible and available to guests for the Hawaiian experience and to cement credibility. DIMENSIONS Must be able to lead by example and provide quality service to all Guests. Must be able to pass a basic safety course. This is a minimal description of duties. NATURE AND SCOPE The Hawaiian Ambassador works in cooperation with the Entertainment Department team members and all other shipboard departments. Under the direction of the Cruise Director, the Hawaiian Ambassador is responsible for participation and leadership of all assigned activities. Responsible for supervision and control of all guests in many of the entertainment related-activities, with enthusiasm and charisma. The Hawaiian Ambassadors will work to ensure that programs (performances, crafts, classes, dance, lectures and commentary) on board the NCLA fleet will educate, entertain and enthuse, our guests and crew about the rich culture and history of the Hawaiian Islands and its people. The incumbent must be able to work in a multi-cultural environment; also, must be able to adjust to changes in schedules, assignments and deadlines. QUALIFICATIONS Intermediate to Advanced knowledge and experience is required for the following: performing Hula, ancient and modern, on stage during the Welcome Aboard Show, the Farewell Variety Show, and Kanikapila Show, and as scheduled. One year of experience serving as an effective and entertaining Master of Ceremonies is required. Knowledge of Hawaiian Entertainment, Music and Hula dance is required. Intermediate to Advanced proficiency in the ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i, or Hawaiian Language is required. Intermediate to Advanced knowledge of the background of Hawaiian culture and history is required. Teaching background and/or Hawaiian entertainment background is preferred. Strong background in public speaking. Minimum one year of previous experience in the service industry is required. One year experience in tourism/travel industry preferred. Intermediate to Advanced software skills with the following programs are required: Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel. EDUCATION Bachelors degree or foreign equivalent in a hospitality related discipline is required. ATTRIBUTES Extrovert, quick and critical thinker, witty, personable, and articulate. In order to qualify for a MMC, applicants must demonstrate the following physical abilities necessary to perform shipboard duties per USCG guidelines (COMPDTPUB 16700.4 NVIC 04-8). If the applicant has a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40.0 or higher, or if the verifying medical practitioner doubts the applicants ability to successfully perform any of the following functions, a suitable practical demonstration is required for those functions. The verifying medical practitioner, in consultation with any other qualified practitioners he/she deems appropriate, determines whether a practical demonstration is necessary, and whether the applicant is physically competent or not physically competent. Is able to maintain a sense of balance without disturbance while walking and standing. Is able to climb up and down vertical ladders and stairways. Is able to step over a door sill or coming up to 24 inches in height. Is able to move through a restricted opening of 24 inches by 24 inches. Is able to open and close watertight doors that weigh up to 55 pounds. Must be able to move hands/arms in vertical and horizontal directions, rotate wrists and reach above shoulder height to turn handles. Is able to lift at least a 40 pound load off the ground, and to carry, push or pull the same load. Is able to grasp and manipulate common tools such as wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers and pliers. Is able to crouch, kneel and crawl. Is able to distinguish differences in texture and temperature by feel. Is able to intermittently stand on feet for up to four hours with minimal rest periods. Is able to react to visual alarms and instructions. Is able to react to audible alarms and instructions. Is capable of normal conversation. Is able to pull an uncharged 1.5 inch diameter, 50’ fire hose with nozzle to full extension, and to lift a charged 1.5 inch diameter fire hose to firefighting position. Is physically able to put on a Personal Flotation Devise (PFD) without assistance from another individual. Has no physical limitations that would hinder or prevent the performance of duties.
