Work Location: BUSD Transportation Facility - Cameron Park, California Work Hours: Full-time, Monday through Friday (6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) Compensation: Starting salary: $31.27 - $34.49 About the Position: Head Mechanic — School District Vehicle Maintenance and Repair The Buckeye Union School District Head Mechanic oversees the inspection, repair, and maintenance of all district-owned vehicles, primarily school buses, vans, and support vehicles. This position leads garage operations, coordinates preventative maintenance schedules, and ensures compliance with state and federal transportation regulations. The Head Mechanic works closely with transportation staff, drivers, and administrators to promote the safety, reliability, and performance of the fleet. Key Responsibilities in Fleet Maintenance and Bus Safety Supervise, schedule, and oversee the work of other mechanic and support personnel in the transportation maintenance facility Perform and coordinate routine maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on school buses and district vehicles Maintain detailed service records and documentation in accordance with district policies and regulatory requirements Order, track, and organize parts, tools, and supplies for efficient garage operations Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and safety issues on district vehicles and recommend timely solutions Assist with recruitment, training, and professional development of maintenance team members Uphold all safety standards and ensure vehicles meet state and federal DOT (Department of Transportation) requirements Develop and maintain preventive maintenance schedules aligned with manufacturer and regulatory guidelines Collaborate with the Transportation Supervisor and building administrators regarding vehicle availability, repairs, and safety concerns Respond promptly to emergency repairs and breakdowns, ensuring minimal disruption to school transportation services Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in the district garage and maintenance areas Qualifications and Requirements for School District Head Mechanic High School diploma or equivalent required; completion of a formal automotive/diesel mechanic training program preferred Minimum 3 years of experience in school bus or commercial vehicle maintenance; supervisory or lead mechanic experience preferred Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License Class II Strong working knowledge of gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and alternative fuel vehicle repair procedures and diagnostic equipment Familiarity with State of California and federal regulations on school transportation, vehicle safety, and emissions standards Excellent organization, communication, and recordkeeping skills Proficient using computers and fleet management software to track maintenance and repairs Physical ability to safely lift and move equipment and perform repairs in a workshop setting Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices and supporting a positive team environment Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and respond flexibly to emergencies or urgent transportation needs Why Join Buckeye Union School District Fleet Services?
