West Island School is currently seeking to appoint Head of Biology (TLR3) to start in August 2026 on a full-time, 2-year renewable contract by mutual agreement. Key Responsibilities Leadership and Vision Lead the Biology department, establishing a coherent vision that enhances teaching and learning experiences for all students. Oversee the planning and delivery of engaging, inquiry-based lessons across Years 7-13, including IGCSE and IBDP programmes. Collaborate with the Head of Science to implement cross-curricular links and assist in the IBMYP program. Teaching and Learning Standards Monitor and evaluate teaching quality and student performance, ensuring high standards are maintained. Utilise assessment data to identify areas for improvement, particularly for underachieving groups (G&T, SEN, EAL). Develop and implement effective schemes of work and ensure adherence to IBO regulations. Professional Development Support the professional growth of department members through mentoring and INSET opportunities. Foster a culture of professional dialogue and collaboration among staff. Curriculum Development & Student Support Create and manage the annual department development plan aligned with school priorities. Analyse and report on Biology examination outcomes to inform future teaching strategies. Help prepare students for biology-related university courses Pastoral Care Serve as a form tutor/home room teacher to a group of approximately 15 students, supporting their holistic development by guiding their academic and social well-being and welfare. Extra-Curricular Contributions Actively participate in extra-curricular events and activities, either through personal interests or in support of student-led initiatives. Expectations Demonstrate a commitment to collaboration and continuous learning within the teaching team. Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation and growth. Utilise the exceptional resources and facilities available to maximize student potential Maintain high standards of student conduct and support adherence to school rules and values Educational Requirements & Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Biology or a related field with PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate of Education), or equivalent. Proven experience in teaching Biology across various age groups (Years 7-13) and abilities, with a strong track record of student achievement and engagement. Demonstrated leadership skills, with experience in departmental management, curriculum development, or a willingness to step up as Head of Faculty when needed. Experience implementing innovative teaching strategies, including inquiry-based and experiential learning approaches. Professional Skills and Abilities A proactive, adaptable, and passionate team player. Commitment to inclusion and fostering a supportive learning environment. Proven experience leading or contributing to extra-curricular programmes. Ability to work collaboratively in developing curriculum and pedagogy.
