Job Purpose GSK is seeking an outstanding and visionary leader to join our global pharmaceutical organisation as the Head of Early Development Statistics in Oncology. This pivotal position sits at the heart of our commitment to bringing transformative medicines to patients, driving statistical excellence and innovation from the earliest phases of drug discovery through to the demonstration of proof of concept or mechanism. Working in close partnership with research, translational, and clinical teams, this individual will lead a world-class statistics group that shapes and delivers the quantitative strategies underpinning GSK’s next generation of oncology medicines. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional leadership, scientific acumen, and a passion for translating scientific discovery into patient benefit through robust, data-driven decision making. Key Responsibilities: Build and lead a team of statisticians who specialize in early statistical strategies by oncology indications. Serve as a statistical expert for internal and external collaborators, investigators, consultants, and contractual resources. Build a dynamic environment that attracts, develops, and retain top quantitative talent through personalised career development and an unwavering commitment to scientific curiosity, cross-functional collaboration, and continuous improvement. To foster a culture of innovation, encouraging the adoption and development of cutting-edge statistical and quantitative methods. Ensure GSK remains at the forefront of design and methodological advances in early oncology development, applying creative solutions to accelerate and de-risk development. Shape the strategic direction, vision, and culture for the Early Development Oncology Statistics group by aligning innovative statistical approaches with the performance goals of Research and Development. Influence planning and decision-making strategy over a portfolio of assets though building and maintaining effective business relationships with key functions. Responsible for driving the statistical strategy of oncology assets from lead optimization through to clinical proof of concept, ensuring all early development programs are underpinned by optimal designs, robust statistical analyses, and data-driven Bayesian decision-making frameworks. Leverage the use of historic and legacy data, integrating prior knowledge into current projects. Oversee strategies for effective data mining, evidence synthesis, and predictive modelling to inform program design, biomarker selection, and decision-making. Partner with counterparts in the Programming organization to ensure high-quality execution of all trial analyses, planning the resource strategy, with accountability for budget, quality and CRO oversight. Represent GSK-Oncology Biostatistics in industry and academic forums, establishing the group’s reputation as the preeminent early development statistics organisation in oncology. Forge partnerships with top external experts, consortia, and regulatory bodies, ensuring a continuous infusion of cutting-edge insights and collaborative excellence Serve as a member of the Oncology Biostatistics Leadership Team. Why you? Basic Qualifications: PhD or equivalent in Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematics, or related quantitative discipline. Significant experience in statistical support of early clinical development, preferably within oncology and the pharmaceutical/biotech industry. Expertise in the design, analysis, and interpretation of preclinical and early clinical studies, including biomarker development and translational strategy. Demonstrated success leading and developing high-performing teams in a global environment. Strong track record of methodological innovation and application of advanced quantitative approaches (e.g., Bayesian methods, model-informed drug development). Experience influencing cross-functional teams and senior decision-makers. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex statistical concepts to diverse audiences.
