EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE

  • Assessed at a minimum of SFIA Level 6, with extensive senior-level experience in engineering or asset management within complex organisations.
  • Proven track record in leading engineering functions, delivering strategic initiatives, and implementing effective engineering strategies, policies, and systems.
  • Strong expertise in engineering management systems, design management, and competency frameworks, with a deep understanding of light rail design principles, components, and processes.
  • Expert-level knowledge in systems engineering and reliability engineering, with the ability to provide high-level technical oversight and assurance.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and operate at a strategic level, with excellent stakeholder engagement and collaboration skills.
  • In-depth understanding of OHS&E legislative requirements and experience in conducting audits, assurance programs, and compliance activities.
  • Skilled in the development and publication of regulations, standards, and technical documentation, with a high level of technical writing competence.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from a Washington Accord accredited institution; preference for Systems or Transport Engineering.
  • Registered (or eligible for registration) on the Victorian Engineers Register (VER).
  • Chartered (or on a clear pathway to chartership) with Engineers Australia or an equivalent body under the Mutual Recognition Agreement, in the Electrical Engineering competency area.
Responsibilities

ROLE PURPOSE

At Yarra Trams, our mission is to deliver world-class transport services to our passengers. This role supports that mission by:

  • Actively contributing to engineering management initiatives through positive, constructive, and collaborative engagement.
  • Serving as a high-level specialist in engineering management.
  • Applying substantial technical expertise as a senior practitioner in the field.
  • Acting as a senior point of contact for both internal and external stakeholders, including the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator and the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP).

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the development and maintenance of engineering Standards, procedures, and guidelines to align with best practices and support Yarra Trams’ strategic goals, with a focus on enhancing safety and performance.
  • Own and manage the Standards Development Plan, delivering improved technical documentation that enhances safety, operational efficiency, and supports material reuse and recycling initiatives.
  • Oversee Engineering Management System processes, ensuring quality assurance across Engineering Change (including waivers and TMP concessions), Technical Notes, Type Approvals, and related documentation.
  • Manage and maintain the engineering competency framework, including responsibilities under the Engineering Design Authority, to ensure ongoing professional capability.
  • Serve as the Professional Head of Systems Engineering, providing strategic leadership, mentoring, and professional development to systems engineers across the organisation.
  • Function as the Engineering Design Authority for the Systems Engineering discipline, including RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety), ensuring technical advisory and assurance services are effectively delivered.
  • Approve all systems engineering processes, procedures, and complex changes, maintaining the integrity and consistency of system engineering practices across the business.
