We are partnering with a major consumer-facing organisation undergoing a significant evolution of its technology and engineering capability.
This is an opportunity for an experienced Head of Engineering to take ownership of a sizeable engineering function and reshape how software is designed, built and delivered across the organisation.
Reporting to the CTO, you will lead multiple engineering teams and Engineering Managers, with responsibility for engineering delivery, architecture, capability, operating model and distributed/offshore development teams.
This isn't a role for someone who wants to sit several layers removed from technology. We're looking for an engineering leader who understands the detail, can challenge technical decisions and remains credible with engineers and architects, while operating effectively at executive level.
The role You will:
- Lead and develop a large, multi-team software engineering function.
- Own engineering delivery across significant customer and enterprise technology platforms.
- Lead Engineering Managers and senior technical leaders rather than attempting to manage every team directly.
- Take responsibility for architecture and solutioning capability within the engineering function.
- Shape the engineering operating model, organisational structure and ways of working.
- Build an effective combination of Australian and offshore/distributed engineering capability.
- Drive greater predictability, productivity and commercial discipline from engineering investment.
- Improve delivery performance through clear planning, governance, accountability and measurable outcomes.
- Balance modern Agile engineering practices with the structured planning, milestones and Waterfall-style governance required for large programs and enterprise delivery.
- Partner closely with Product, Technology and business leadership to turn commercial priorities into executable technology outcomes.
- Maintain appropriate engineering standards across architecture, quality, cloud, DevOps, security and platform resilience.
- Remain close enough to the technology to challenge architecture, understand delivery issues and help teams make pragmatic technical decisions.
What we're looking for You will ideally have progressed through a strong technical career before moving into engineering leadership – for example Software Engineer → Technical Lead/Architect → Engineering Manager → Head of Engineering/Technology.
You are likely to bring:
- Leadership experience across 50+ engineers or similarly complex multi-team environments.
- Experience leading Engineering Managers and senior technical specialists.
- Strong experience building and managing offshore or globally distributed engineering teams.
- Evidence of improving the cost, productivity and delivery effectiveness of engineering organisations.
- Strong architecture and solution-design understanding.
- A genuine software engineering background and enough technical depth to remain credible with senior engineers.
- Experience delivering complex, high-volume or business-critical digital platforms.
- Strong cloud and modern engineering experience.
- Exposure to Microsoft/.NET environments would be highly advantageous.
- Experience operating across both Agile engineering environments and more structured enterprise/program delivery models.
- The commercial maturity to understand that engineering success is measured not simply by technology quality, but by delivery, customer outcomes and return on technology investment.
Why consider it? This is not a BAU leadership position.
You'll have the mandate to influence the structure, capability, architecture and delivery model of a substantial engineering organisation and work directly with the CTO on its next phase of development.
- It would particularly suit an engineering leader who enjoys building and transforming teams, improving delivery performance and staying connected to technology, rather than moving further away from engineering into a broad corporate CTO role.
