We’ve built a culture that celebrates community, collaboration and innovation, where people love what they do.
What’s the job?
We’re looking for a Head of Engineering to lead the software development capability within Torrens University’s Digital IT team. This is a hands-on technical leadership role not just managing from a distance, but actively guiding, supporting, and enabling engineering teams to deliver.

You’ll oversee cross-functional teams across frontend, backend, and DevOps, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, enterprise-grade applications and integrations that power our four key strategic workstreams:

  • Growth & Enrolment
  • Student Experience & Support
  • Teaching & Learning
  • Digital Workforce

This role is about driving engineering excellence and removing barriers to delivery. You’ll provide technical oversight, ensure scalable and efficient solutions, and help the team continuously improve how they work.

What you’ll do:

  • Set engineering direction: Define scalable architecture, champion best practices, and align with enterprise goals.
  • Unblock and enable delivery: Step in to solve complex technical issues, streamline workflows, and make sure projects move forward efficiently.
  • Drive improvement: Introduce tools and processes that reduce manual effort, optimise DevOps practices, and deliver quick wins.
  • Build capability: Mentor engineers, grow talent, and foster a high-performance, collaborative culture.
  • Partner across teams: Work closely with Product, Architecture, QA, and business stakeholders to deliver solutions that matter.

Who you are:

  • A hands-on engineering leader with experience across frontend, backend, infrastructure, and security, and able to dive into technical problem-solving when needed.
  • Proven success leading cross-functional teams in Agile/Scrum environments.
  • Experienced in delivering enterprise-scale software solutions and driving platform and architecture initiatives.
  • Strong ability to identify inefficiencies, solve delivery blockers, and optimise development practices.
  • Skilled at balancing strategic oversight with technical depth.
  • Experienced with key platforms including Salesforce (non-negotiable), and ideally Banner, Canvas, or Sitecore.
  • Cloud platform expertise (AWS, GCP, Azure) and/or DevOps tooling knowledge highly regarded.
