ABOUT US
The National Railway Museum in York and Locomotion in Shildon (part of the Science Museum Group) exist to inspire the next generation with the past, present and future of railways. As dynamic visitor attractions, we have notable growth aspirations and captivating stories to communicate, currently undergoing or transitioning from significant capital undertakings and major renovations. Both museums are internationally recognised, while also retaining a profound sense of place and relevance for their local and regional communities.
As we celebrate 200 years of the railways and 50 years since the museum first opened its doors, we are seeking a Head of Marketing and Communications based in York with regular travel to NRM on a permanent, full-time basis. You’ll help us grow as both a museum and visitor attraction, building on our existing brand both regionally and nationally.
This is a rare opportunity to oversee the marketing and communications operations for the World’s greatest Railway Museum at a pivotal point in its history.

ABOUT THE ROLE
As Head of Marketing & Communications, you will play a crucial role in enhancing our outreach and attracting both new and long-time visitors to explore the railway’s rich history, current developments, and future prospects. You’ll develop, deliver and evaluate the marketing and PR strategy for both museums to enhance greater awareness, increased visitor footfall and maximise revenue.
As a key contributor to the Senior Leadership Team at the National Railway Museum, you will report directly to the Director and work within a forward-thinking, dynamic museum that has significant potential to engage broader audiences across the country and beyond, while also connecting deeply with established and emerging communities in York.
This is a deeply rewarding role where two days are never the same and a working environment that will develop your skills as we look to inspire the next generation of engineers.
The role currently works to a hybrid working pattern, which offers flexibility to work from home. However as per the responsibilities of the position, there is still a requirement for onsite presence a minimum three days a week and when site-based activity requires it.
Working with a world-leading museum group that offers access to truly unique environments and collections, you’ll benefit from the perks listed below, as well as full support for life events such as parental and adoption leave, sickness, and career breaks.
